jillybean
Hi, MP's NV, your partner opens 1♠ in first position - pass to you: ♠♥ Qxxx♦ AJxxx♣ Jxxxx Is 1nt my only bid? If 1nt promises any support for ♠ then I have to pass which doesnt sound right. Or is this just another interesting, frustrating, challenging hand ? thanksjb
Blofeld
Hi Kathryn, Playing a standard system 1NT is indeed the only bid here, and you're right that passing isn't attractive. 1NT can't promise any support for ♠, though - precisely because of hands like this that are too weak to make a 2/1 bid but too good to pass. whereagles
What he said, plus note that 1x 1NT doesn't always promise a balanced hand. 1♠ 1NT may be unbalanced with ♥ and/or ♦ and/or ♣1♥ 1NT may be unbalanced with ♦ and/or ♣1♦ 1NT may be unbalanced with ♣1♣ 1NT now, that is balanced. paulg
What he said, plus note that 0-4-5-5 hands have always been a problem in standard systems - perhaps some of the Moscito lads can show this shape. And it's only a misfit when partner rebids spades which, although likely, is not certain. Paul
P_Marlowe
Hi, 1NT does not promise support for spades,it just says, I am not broke, but to weak forany other action. It you play forcing NT, ... your assumption, that 1NT promises some support, seems to indicate that, the forcing NT will give your side the chance to improve the contract, opener will only bid 2S holding a 6 carder. With kind regardsMarlowe
