Meckwell Rebids

In Meckwell Precision the rebids after 1♦-2♣ are

 

2♥ = 11-13 balanced

2♠ = 4+crd ♣-support and a shortness

2NT = 4441 min

3NT = 4441 max

 

I have not been able to find out the meaning of the other rebids. Can someone fill in the gaps? I am also interested in how the bidding continues after 1♦-2♣-2♥ and 1♦-2♣-2♠.

 

What do other Precision players in this situation?

Presumably,

 

1♦ 2♣

2♦ = min 5+ diamonds. May have a major, since pard will rebid 2M with a game-force in clubs/major.

3♣ = club raise, no shortness? Probably forcing up to 4♣.

3♦ = 1-suiter, max hand.

3M = depends on how meckwell bid 65s with ♦/M. Else it might be some super max 6-4.

 

Just a guess, of course. Not sure if I like their 2♠ bid, but the 2♥ bid definitely is a good idea. (Too bad it isn't natural, but oh well.)

I can't tell you what they play, but this scheme is actually very similar to what I play, albeit not in a Precision base. (We play 2S as a game forcing club raise and 3C as non-forcing, but that isn't necessary in a strong club system).

 

Exact continuations will depend on how far 2C is forcing and the rest of the system. We play it as non-game forcing (in fact responder can pass over 2D). Continuations will also depend on how 1D - 3C is played, and how many diamonds opener has shown.

 

After 1D - 2C - 2H, a fairly simply set of continuations are:

 

- 2S neutral game forcing relay

- 2NT natural, non-forcing

- 3C natural (if 1D - 3C is invitational, this is then forcing with good clubs)

- 3D natural, invitational with diamonds (again depends on rest of system)

- 3H/3S natural, game forcing

 

 

Our continuations over the 2S relay are natural, but in the context of a system where opener hasn't shown diamonds, you could play

 

..... 2NT no diamond suit

.......3C 3-card support, 4 diamonds

.......3D 5 diamonds (1D - 2C - 2D is then unbalanced)

.......3H 4-4 in the reds

.......3S 4-4 in the pointeds

2♣ shows at least 10hcp and a 5crd suit. I consider the bidding forcing until 2NT.

1♦ - 3♣ is a limit with a 4crd ♦ and at least a decent 5crd ♣.

The 1♦ opening always shows at least two ♦. Besides the hands that "natural" bidders open 1♦ with, 1♦ is also opened with all 11-13 balanced hands and with all 3-suiters not short in ♦ (also those with longer ♣). A hand with 6♣ is opened 2♣ and a 3-suiter short in ♦ is opened 2♥.

 

After 1♦-2♣-2♥:

Is 2NT a signoff? Does 2♠ include a hand that wants to invite to 3NT (opener bids 2NT with a minimum)? With what type of GF hands do you bid 2♠?

After 1♦-2♣-2♥ Meckwell play the following:

 

2♠ Transfer to 2NT (either to right side 3NT or to look for slam fit)

2NT 6+♣, FG

3♣ 6+♣, NF

3♦ 6♣+4♥

3♥ 6♣+4♠

3NT Signoff

 

There is no need to play in 2NT after 1♦-2♣-2♥: Meckwell play 1♦-2NT as Bal 11-12
