RHO opens 1. What is your bid?

At our table the bidding did go:

(1S)-1NT-(2H)-DBL

You play with an unknown adv partner. What do you think his DBL is?

Bidding continues:

(P)-3D-(P)-3H

(P)-3NT-(P)-4H

(P)-5D-All Pass

North did have:

xxxx=KQ98xx=x=xx

Remark: It is possible that the above hands are not 100% what they were cause I was N and I urgently had to leave after the bidding...Thinking about it: North was dealer and passed first. Does that change anything?

My main question is:

RHO opens 1S and you have 17HCP, singleton H, double stop S and 4=1=4=4 or 3=1=5=4. Do you bid 1NT?

2D. If I did bid 1N I would sit for the heart double, though, with a max and good defensive values. I don't like the heart double, though. Better to pass and take the plus as that hand has no value in anything other than defending hearts.

I bid 2D, and don't even think it's an underbid (it's a max, sure).

I like negative doubles over overcalls of 1N, but standard is certainly still penalty and that's what I'd assume with any pickup partner. Also, looking at our hand, we can guess how it was meant.

I would also sit for the penalty double having bid 1N. Once you bid 3D, and then 3N, I'd pass 4H though -- partner's 4H was made with the realization that LHO has 5 hearts and you have xx and a good diamond suit... you have no reason to overrule that just because you have one fewer, especially having already shown your diamonds. Partner's hand is worth only 1 trick in notrump (under the assumption you have 2 hearts) so I do think his 4H bid was reasonable (trying to go down the smallest number, at that point).

With 4-1-4-4, I'm sympathetic to 1N and would consider it. You can pass and hope to double later (of P 1N P P or of P 1N P 2H perhaps, or of P 1N P 2m; P 2S P P -- the first and third for penalty/cards and the middle one for takeout) as your other option.

I think this hand is a little too good for a 1N overcall.

I'd double and bid 2N over 2H. I'd sit for 4H.

I'd pass the double of 2H if I chose 1N initially. Pard might have a string of hearts and nothing else, which makes 3N rather dicey.

what is wrong with x then bidding Diamonds next?

I thought this shows a very strong hand? also shows an unbalanced strong hand which is what you have ?

What's wrong is that you have a singleton heart, so you may get into trouble. Since you are not that strong I would not even consider doubling.

2d for now.

overcalling light is a big issue...surprise, many overcall light and x heavy....newer players seem to overcall light and x light.......

Last night an "advanced opp" told me with 14 hcp he x and rebids to show good hand.

Overcalling vul meaning real hand seems to help this issue.
