sceptic
hi, I opened 1NT pard bid 2Clubs (stayman) I bid 2 Diamonds, then it all went wrong [hv=d=e&v=e&n=sq8532h62daj2c872&w=sk64hkjt7dt6ck943&e=sat9hq4dkq95caqt6&s=sj7ha9853d8743cj5]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - 1NT Pass 2♣ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 3♠ Pass 3NT Pass 4♣ Pass 4♥ Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Pass bearing in mind the conversation with plays what I think is european style, what should the 2 spade bid mean, I am happy to accept full blame for all my crap bids, I just dont understand what 2 spades should show, if it helps we had a conversation about 2D showing 1 4 card major and how would I show both majors i.e 1NT 2C 2NT shows both 4 card majors 3nt also seemed to me like some kind of slam move after what I assumed was agreeing spades as trumps (I am totally confused and need help here TY Not sure if this helps BUT I thought she could have 5 or more spades as she had not transfered even though we play them, because she may have both major suits
Finch
Partner was insane. In the English style, 2S shows a hand that wants to play in 2S (likely weak with 5 spades and 4 hearts). It sounds from the conversation as if partner thought you were having some sort of puppet Stayman sequence, where 2D denied a 5-card major but showed a 4-card major, and 2S showed 4 hearts. But I don't know anyone sensible who would assume this without discussion.

blackshoe
Bridge is a partnership game. What you play is not a matter for unilateral decision, it's a matter for partnership agreement. The fact that a player prefers some convention or other is not sufficient reason to use that convention, without discussion. Find out, beforehand, whether both players in a partnership are on the same wavelength. If not, discuss it until you are. To do otherwise is suicidal. :D

However I do think it is important to be sympathetic to the BIL players who may often not know what is considered 'standard' and what is an agreement. Many of the BIL have only played bridge on-line and their principal learning comes from the large number of free sessions available on BBO. I often feel that this means that they will come to regard as standard the methods that their favourite teacher employs. Perhaps sceptic's partner has been following Luis' excellent sessions or just read his signature? ;) :P :)
