hrothgar
Given that the auction takes place today, I went and created a summary table describing the BBO forums consensus view. I gave each pair that was ranked first a 6, second place pairs recieved a 5... I then summed across all ranked pairs Fantoni-Nunes 76Hampson-Rodwell 50Zia Mahmood – Andy Robson 47El Ahmadey-Sadek 45Levin Weinstein 44Fallenius-Welland 25Versace-Sementa 13Lev-Pzsczola 10Gavin Wolpert – Vincent Demuy 9Stewart-Woolsey 7Brogeland – DelMonte 6Russ Ekeblad – Ron Rubin 5Hamman - Lall 4Marty Fleisher – Chip Martel 4Alain Levy –Hervé Mouiel 3Ferraro-Medala 2Cutis Cheek – Joe Grue 2Chris Compton – Mike Passell 2Berkowitz-Pollack 1Bruun – Fredin 1George Jacobs – Ralph Katz 1Crasen-Krekorian 1 It will be interesting to see how this compares to both the auction and the final results. jdonn
Fwiw, Fantoni/Nunes and Versace/Sementa had an awful set together on vugraph last night. V-S had a bad misunderstanding on the auction 1♦ 1♥ dbl rdbl 2♥. Versace was responder, and his double showed four or five spades. He thought the 2♥ bid agreed spades and he wouldn't stop returning to that suit until he finally got doubled (at the 4 level), but Sementa just had a good hand with 5-5 in the minors. They were extremely fortunate to escape for down 1 doubled.
hrothgar
The auction results have just been posted. Here are the top 10 pairs I don't know the underlying auction system well enough to guess how well the sale price maps onto the expected value of the partnership. If this were a finance class, then the price/earnings ratio for all these pairs should even out. In actuality, emotions may very well run high 1. Mahmood-Robson2. Fantoni-Nunes3. Levin-Weinstein4. Sementa-Versace5. ElAhmadey-Sadek6. Hampson-Rodwell7. Lev-Pzszcola8. Levy-Mouiel9. Broegland-DelMonte10. Fallenius-Welland The price spread between number 1 and number 10 is $48K : 21K Eyeballing the results, here's my take on the significant differences: Overall, BBO and the auction agreed very closely regarding the top teams. The BBO and auction top 10 agreed on 4 of the top 5 and 8 of the top 10 pairs. Looking at the top 5 pairs, BBO's number 2 choice (Hampson-Rodwell) went in the #6 spot in the auction. Looking at the top 10 results, the main differences were at the margins. BBO values Fantoni and Nunes significantly higher than the "smart money". Fantoni and Nunes scored almost 1.5 times as many points as the number 2 team. In the auction, Fantoni Nunes was the number 2 pair. The smart money values Sementa-versace MUCH higher than BBO. Sementa-Versace went for 42K (1K less than F+N) The "smart money" likes Zia-Robson much more than BBO who ranked them third. (I'll note in passing that Zia-Robson didn't even make my top six. Personally, I think that there is a lack of chemistry in this partnership. Z+R never seem to do as well together as I think that they should. There. I have pretty much guarunteed a first place for Z+R)
bid_em_up
From todays Cavendish Bulletin (hope its ok to post this....): Changed Days, Indeedby Sam Leckie Most of you know of my success in naming the winners ofthis event. I have been coming to this tournament for thepast nine years. Six out of 9 can’t be bad. I have surprisedeven my modest self, but perhaps my greatest triumph wasa couple of years ago when WBP asked me not to name myselection until after the auction as it could affect the prices.Hell, did I not give you a complete profile of the winning pair(Gitelman-Moss) the year they won? The one pick I have never made in all these years iseverybody’s favorite player—Zia. I have always been of theopinion that the method of scoring and other factors madehim a no-go and my judgment has been spot-on because thebest finish he has ever achieved was second place in 1998,playing with Steve Weinstein. Believe me, even I could finishrunner-up playing with four-time champion Steve. This yearI feel is different. The other factors have been reduced (thisvenue is an expensive taxi ride to the strip) and his teamingup with Andy Robson (I swear, the kid is still growing!). A fewyears ago they were a very successful partnership all overEurope and the fact that Zia has gone to all the trouble ofreinventing it must be a pointer. What finally decided it for me was an incident that happenedTuesday evening. Zia was having a meal with a few of theplayers when suddenly he announced he was going to bed.The time was only 8:45 pm. This was surprising enough, butthe clincher for me was that all the other players actuallybelieved him! http://www.thecavendish.com/2006/FRIBULL2006.pdf
DenisO
The "smart money" likes Zia-Robson much more than BBO who ranked them third.
