Team match with selected boards?

I just played a 9-board team match. When the match started the host announced something about pre duplicated boards. Indeed the boards were sort of set. This was partly to my advantage, but the host clearly knew the boards himself. He bid and made 7S in a extremely suspicious way. (Triple Grand Coup).

 

Board 9 was the same as board 1, I suspect the host only loaded 8 boards and the software restarts at beginning.

 

To start with I never even knew you could do this. If I start a team match I do not get the option of loading boards.

 

But even if you could do this it is not bridge.

You have to be quick to load boards into a team game but any host can do it.

 

It is essentially the same as loading boards for a tournament. When the team game is listed, you can enter select it in the list of games about to start, use the TABLE button (if host) and you will see an option near the bottom to pre-load hands.

 

You have the time from when you have issued the invitations for the game .. so generally about 60-90 seconds.

 

It is useful if you trust the host, or the host is not playing as some of us do for the BIL occasionally.

First and foremost, thanks for all the work that you put into Dealer over the years. Really nice program.

 

On to more serious matters:

 

BBO permits Tournament Directors to create tournaments using pre-existing hands. TD's value this functionality for a number of reasons:

 

1. Some bridge clubs provide their customers with fairly sophisticated hand records at the close of the event. Using pre-generated hands permits the organizers to do a lot of the work before the tournament.

 

2. A number of teachers like to run theme tournaments that are designed to educate players about a specific point, be it finesses, squeezes, or gambing 3NT openings. Here once again, the ability to use canned hands is very important to the process.

 

On a personal level, assuming that I trust the TD running the tournament, I don't much care whether the hands were generated by BBOs dealer algorithm or some external process.

 

With this said and done, I very much dislike tournaments where the hands have been pre-selected to be "interesting" for whatever reason. For wahtever reason, I don't enjoy those games.

Like Richard, I think that a game called "bridge" is already a lot of fun.
