Here's a hand from our local league (intermediate opps). RHO opens 2NT (20-22) and LHO raises straight to 6NT. What's your lead?

a Spade and I hope the next contributor votes for the jack of Club :P

To me, this situation does not sound like we need an aggressive attack, so I hope, that this lead will most likely not blow a trick.

Torn between a and a . Think I go with a diamond in the end - has a couple of different ways to win.

Traditionally if the opponents show 2 balanced hands then bid 6N, you need to lead passively (for obvious reaosns). LHO may be bidding 6N based on a long club suit, but I think this is unlikely as:

-He didn't try for 6C

-He didn't ask for aces. If he had some hand like AKQxxx(x) of clubs and out, he wouldn't know he wasnt off 2 aces.

-He didnt try for 7. If he had some long club suit plus another card, he may try for 7.

I'll go with a spade, and let declarer do his own work.

Spade is the most passive lead I can find. If I really *must* lead a diamond, I would lead low, not the queen. At least a low one gives declarer a losing option with

K10x

A8(x)

It is only right to lead an honour in the unlikely event that declarer is empty and dummy has the king without the 10. Even if that is the case, a low diamond would work because partner will be smart enough to the insert the 10 if he has A10.

The lead of the queen is safer anytime dummy has a doubleton or when declarer has both the ace and king and also in the rare case when declarer has H10x and dummy Hxx and partner 98.

It sure looks a LOT safer than leading low.

I am a little surprised by the vehement oppsition to Q.After all it will lose only if dummy has H-10-x or if declaring side has both top honors split and possess 10 9.

How and why are other leads safer or more constructive? Will they not resolve declarers problem of finding the Q or make P play off an A without catching an honor?

Why are we betting that 10 and both top honors are with declarers side?

We don't, but a low diamond also caters to singleton 10 or K with partner. It would not look pretty if we led an honour and partner had any of these holdings.

This was a problem faced by one of my teammates. He chose a small diamond, which was not a success:

Declarer took a losing spade finesse, but subsequently guessed the hearts correctly and made twelve tricks courtesy of the very fortunate black-suit squeeze.

A spade, heart or high diamond lead would have won us the match. Declarer has an interesting play problem on the Q lead (any offers?), but as the cards lie he would surely have gone down.

A high diamond lead is interesting.

You immediately play 3 rounds of diamonds (looks normal single dummy) which already gives RHO pain.

We can see how to make 12 tricks easily double dummy, but whether you would in practice probably depends on RHO's discards. I can see some hearts going (although looking at all the hands, keeping hearts religiously might work), and then declarer assumes the hearts play for four tricks and may make on the black suit squeeze.

p.s. I would have led a spade, but little virtue in saying so after seeing all the hands.
