We bid it 1-4*splinter-5*1st rnd control-5*1st rnd control-6*2nd rnd control-6(splinter was singleton )

Is this a reasonable hand to show splinters and cue-bidding as an example or were we fortunate?

Had prefered 4 NT too, with 5 Club I have no way to find out, if pd has:

K9542

10

AJ5

Q1083

or

K9542

AJ52

Q1083

or

J9542

10

AQ

QJ108

Ace asking will find this out and if you have the tool (you have) about the void.

Our bidding had been

1 4 4 NT 5 NT (single+2 KCs+ Spade Queen) 6 Spade

Hi,

yes a nice hand to splinter, although I

prefer 4NT instead of 5C, opener knows

that all suit are under control, and 4NT

will tell you about the Aces and the King

of Spade, ... the King of spade will not get

revealed by a cue bidding seq.

Depending on your answer structure,

you may even learn, if partner holds a

singleton or a void in hearts.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I totally agree that 4NT is the bid over 4 ;)

Five-card trump support make shortness in clubs more valuable than might be expected. As a result, I tend to avoid a Splinter on such hands, although I have no serious objection.

An alternative, one I prefer, would be a simple 2C, if it is GF. Partner, in practice, will rebid 2H, and I can set trumps at 2S.

In my cuebidding methods, Opener can cuebid 3C, to show (at least) one of the top three clubs and good trumps (2NT would deny two top spades). I then would cue 3D (Ace or King), partner would then cue 3NT (serious, without a heart control -- a feature I like -- and without a third spade honor, of course). I can now cuebid 4H, to show a control, either shortness or an honor (not Last Train because partner showed serious interest and has the "right" to legitimate cuebids, IMO).

This leaves partner well-prepared to ask himself. When I deny a void in hearts, by simply answering, he places this at 6S.
