This can't be an opening bid problem (else why is double an option?)

I don't see that it can be a problem over RHO's opening of 1C (bid 1NT).

I don't see that it can be a problem after partner opens 1C and the next hand doubles (else redouble would be an option).

So what's left? The auction must be 1C P P ?

Got it! That's actually a problem hand, as well.

I would double, planning to rebid 1NT.

Depending on exactly what range you have agreed, a 'standard' 1NT overcall of 1C shows 15-17, 15-18, 16-18, 14-17 HCP with a club stop, and usually not with clubs as your shortest suit. This seems to be a textbook example.

Clearly 1NT didn't work, otherwise you wouldn't have presented this as a problem.

Since I (as usual) did not have a natural 1NT available I overcalled 1, which worked much better than the field decision to bid 1NT. So I was wondering if anyone might overcall if they HAD a natural 1NT available with a major wide open (which was the reason why 1NT didn't work - opps have 5 cashing .

If you play strong NT, would you open this hand 1D?

Or, if you play weak NT, would you open the same hand without the DK 1D?

After all, the heart suit is wide open, and clearly a 1D opening could work better.

That is what partners are for. If you had majors you'd have dbled. So if he doesn't have majors, he should bid something else ....
