Do you invite?

I bid pass. Do you think it makes sense or I just should invite?

(2 are promissing 10-15).

I have "wasted" spade values and empty clubs (all clubs honours will be behind partner's clubs). If partner has AK, some and Q he will accept, but this could be quite wrong. If he is missing honour, it will be (most probably) behind him.

Pass. Partner is bidding my values.. The more I have, the less he has... add to that,

1) I am 4333, we are not vul

2) The king of spades is not a good card for me even though it is well placed.

To invite here will just teach your partner not to balance.

2 does not deny a decent hand, so pass makes little sense. For those who say that bidding may discourage partner from balancing, I say that passing may drive partner nuts! What is he supposed to bid with Qx AQ10xx Jx KQxx as a mundane example? Some might double and then bid 2, but surely 2 is not irrational. Make it Jx AKxxxx Qx Kxx and surely we all bid 2?

So bidding is clear and the question is what?

2N looks right on values and the 10, but understates the length.

However, my length is not likely to be an asset in a trump contract, since I lack even a semblance of a ruffing value. Plus a 9 trick game is more probable than a 10 trick game. Finally, if partner has a weak hand, he may pass 2N which rates to be safer than 3, which is where 2 will drive us.

So I choose 2N rather than 2.

I would not consider 3: 3 says I like my hand for suit play: and I don't.

Easy pass NV.

Would you balance 3 on

x

AQxxxx

xxx

Axx

Yes I would.

Ok, so you and Ben are allowed to pass 2 :P

hum.. wait, I seem to remember you saying in another thread that 3 showed 12-15 and 6 cards. I take it you count aces as 5 points?

I don't understand the question

1 - p - p - 3 is indeed 12-15 with 6 cards to me

The hand you post has 10hcp, is there some confusion about how to count or are you mixing apples with bananas?

Well, if it's 6 cards and 12-15 hcp, the only reason I see you doing it with 10 hcp is if you count aces as 5 points

2 and 3 are two different bids aren't they?

I didn't want to sound rude with my answer but

1 - p - p - 2

and

1 - p - p - 3

Are different things to me.

The first is just a balancing overcall

The second shows about 12-15 and 6 cards in hearts.

Hope it is clear now :-)
