opening bid

There seem to be THREE possible opening bids 1DI,2CL or 5DI all of which have flaws so it is a case of finding the least worst bid[/hv]

Well, the flaws in 2 and 5 are self-evident: I must be missing something: I just don't see the flaws in 1

Does that mean that opening 1 assures us of an easy auction? No, but that is because we have an unusual hand, not because 1 is in any sense a distortion.

In other words, the family of hands described by an initial 1 call is large and includes this hand-type. One cannot say that about either 2 or 5, at least not according to methods that this poster is familiar with :P

I agree with 1D but it does seem to have flaws, namely our rebids.

It does seem that 2c=2dor2h =3d is less than a flaw,,not perfect just less......

With all that said I still open 1D but ugg what a rebid problem.

Let's discuss the different options then.

2 - Do yourself and your partner a favour and don't do this. Opening 2 requires: DEFENCE! You ain't got it.

5 - This may well work and this would be my choice opposite a passed partner. If partner has not passed yet I'd prefer to start lower.

1 - Sometimes opening 1 in your longest suit is just the thing. It leaves room for opps but also for partner. If need be you can bid 5 next round.

opening bid, what is your opening bid in 1st seat

Now for something really different. Since you asked (title) what is "your" opening bid, I will tell you mine. I open this 2. I play multi-2 that include

  • Weak two in either major
  • Strong Balanced hand (excellent upgraded 22 or 23-24 hcp)
  • Acol two in either minor, with 9.5 tricks

Actually the suit here just barely is up to the suit requirement. One side advantage of this method is that if I open 2 and then rebid either minor it is true game force (since I didn't open 2).

I will admit that this treatment is far from standard. Not playing this style multi 2 the right initial bid is as everyone else has pointed out is 1.
