Floating conventions

Recommended Posts

I've added the convention_rkcb_1430.bss convention to a (modified) Bridge Base Basic.bss card file, but the replies do not show up in FD. How can I fix that?

I read Fred's post saying this might be tied in with dispositions, but when I turned on (only) for the sequence 1 - 4NT, the RKCB 1430 replies still do not appear.

Each sequence to get to 4NT is seperate, so if you define

1S - 4NT as RKCB, with rull response, then when you look at

2S - 4NT

3S - 4NT

4S - 4NT

1S-2S-4NT

1S-3S-4NT

It doesn't show up. The reason is that each of these bids COULD have a different meaning. I know it is a pain, and if we hadn't made Claus mad he would have shared how to do this in notepad or even MS Word,

OK. :) I guess I misunderstood Fred's earlier post.

I believe I'll just end the sequences with the asking bids then. There are several (!) routes to RKCB, and I'm too lazy to put in all the responses after every asking bid.

If you're not ready to do scripting, you have to do copy-and-paste or simple find-and-replace. Maybe you have an editor which can handle regular expressions during find-and-replace (Word and Notepad can't), which will make it slightly easier.

Long-term solutions to this and similar problems include a scripting language for bidding systems or a really fancy editor for the FD files.

Well he was going to add floating conventions to do what you suggest. I just don't think he has (if he did, I missed it).

Official word from Fred (unless I have misunderstood him) is:

- floating bids (example: 4N) are only allowed in "Convention" files

- Users cannot create convention files

If you have a convention file you think is general purpose, send it to me, and i'll clean/install it for all, then you'll be able to use it.

uday,

I was only trying to use the existing convention file that was downloaded by BBO into my Conventions folder, not trying to change it in any way. The name of the file is: convention_rkcb_1430.bss.

I had hoped that simply adding the convention to a card, using the normal mechanism, would have some effect. Where a simple 4NT bid is RKCB 1430 (no Kickback) and the followup is always the same (except for which king and queen are counted), I expected that the 5 bid would show up in FD as 1 or 4 key cards, etc.

In fact, that does not happen, and I read over Fred's posts to get a clue on how to make that official convention actually work. When I still could not get it to work, I posted here.

Are you saying that there is not yet a way to use the convention_rkcb_1430.bss file that BBO sent me? The other convention files work as I expected.

And if there is a way to use it, what do I have to do to get the vanilla RKCB 1430 structure to appear in FD?

If you have a convention file you think is general purpose, send it to me, and i'll clean/install it for all, then you'll be able to use it.

If you can 'clean/install' the convention_rkcb_1430.bss file that was already downloaded to me, I would appreciate it. I presume you already have access to the original file.

I'd like to see how it works.

Thanks.

Although the RKCB responses do not show up on the convention card, they do show up in the explanations that appear in actual play in BBO. You don't have to repeat them over and over in your card to have them show up.

I followed these steps, provided by Fred Gitelman, and the RKCB responses showed up just as he said:

This seems to be working for me. I tried it by creating an (invisible) teaching table, sitting in all 4 seats, using the FD file you provide, and then creating an RKCB sequence. I saw the explanations as expected.

I had incorrectly assumed that because the RKCB responses did not appear on the convention card, they would not appear as explanations.

Thanks to all for your help! I'm in the process of switching over to FD.
