pbleighton
Double will likely end in 4S down many. 4NT will at least get you to an 8+ card fit, but still very likely down. You don't know if RHO is strong or preemptive, so 4H is uncertain to make. What else other than pass? Peter

inquiry
Oh boy, this one is worse than the last. I will not repeat the caution about your RHO might have bid a serious 4H to make, in which case if you bid, you maybe going for a huge number (hello 1400??) Also, this time you have a clue. Someone has spades, and it is not you and it is probably not opener. If RHO has spades, he is unlikely bidding 4H as a sacrafice. If partner has spades, he could have bid 2S over 2H if RHO is "prreempting". So with the same caveat that whatever you do can be wrong, here are my choice. At IMPs, I would pass, hopefully in tempo. I know I run the risk of missing 5 of a minor (4S is much less likely, since partner couldn't bid 2S). At matchpoints, i am more likely to double with the plan to bid pull 4S to 5 Clubs (hopefully, meaning pick a minor partner). Maybe they can make 4H and they will forget to double us. Maybe they can make 4H and we are down only one. However, in final analysis, with a semi-balanced hand, and "14 pts" you need to catch partner with not only a maximum for his pass (say 11 or 12 hcp) but also a magic fit (short in one minor, good honors in the other). Even opposite something like... S-Axxx H-xx D-KQxx C-xxx you have a likely 3 losers (2H, 1C). Now catch partner with S-Axxxx H-xx D-KQxx C-xx and you just might make 4S if diamonds are 2-2, or you can safely ruff two clubs in dummy by catching one oppoenent with 4D and 4C's. What ever you do here, it could be very wrong, pass and you may miss 5C/5D, dbl or bid you could go for 800 or more. This one is tilted even more in favor of pass. Poky
let's vote again: 1) dbl 2) pass 3) 4n My opinion is: Pass = 8 (likely to create less damage)Dbl = 4 (gives us an option to play 4Hx - rarely, and leaves us w/o clear bid on partner's 4S)4NT = 2 (too much unilateral, good only if we have 5m or when it is a good save) Poky
Free
Pass: with a little luck you have at least 3 tricks in your hand. Btw, are we playing IMPS or MPs? Make a difference imo...
