Time Stamps in messages

Recommended Posts

There is a problem that occasionally occurs when I am away from keyboard for an extended time. I receive a message from someone and have no idea when this message has been sent. It would be quite useful to be able to switch on a "time stamps" feature for messages, so one would know when the message was sent. These time stamps should best be in the receiver's local time. For those users who don't show location in their profiles it could be in a chosen standard time (GMT for example). This useful feature should not be too difficult to implement, I think. ;)

This would indeed be an interesting feature. Isn't it possible to use the time of the current computer? Doesn't matter where you live, if your computer's time is wrong or right, but you'll still be able to figure out how long ago some message was sent ;)

I agree. While unconditionally imestamping all messages might look ugly, I think it would be useful to do so selectively.

Several approaches come to mind.

1. Have some way to query the BBO cliient for a specific mesage using a point and click operation.

2. Embed a special string in the text that causes the BBO client to replace the string with the current time -- much like the strings used when you want BBO to display the suit symbols.

3. Have the BBO client periodically insert the local time into the chat window. That would at least allow the reader to bracket the arrival time.

If there were an option to switch timestamps on, this timestamp could be set by the client, when receiving the message. This way the client/server communication is untouched. Simply append the timestamp prior to display, if the timestamp option is active.

I'm all for more options. By all means, allow for appending or prepending timestamps (client handles this locally) when requested.

To keep the clutter down but still have the information available, keep the timestamps hidden (in the client) but show the time sent in the context menu (right-click on chat sender).

Is there any possibility of a fix?

While message time stamps may be of low or no priority in the scheme of things, the lack of this feature is one of those irritants that become more vexing each time a broadcast is received announcing that some event is to start in some unknown time in the future.
