Hehe. Just read the Wikipedia article on it. Interesting. It mentions a similar conspiracy theory about North Dakota. A friend of mine used to say "there are no humans left in South Dakota — it's been taken over by aliens". Asked for proof, he would reply "just look at George McGovern!" B-)

HEHE

The city council of Bielefeld

tries hard to generate publicity for Bielefeld and build a nationwide known

public image of the city. Even after 17 years, however, the mayor's office

receives phone calls and e-mails each day which doubt the existence of the

city.

In 1999, five years after the myth started to spread, the city council

released a press statement titled Bielefeld gibt es doch! (There really

is a Bielefeld!). However, the statement's publication date – April 1, 1999 (April

Fools' Day) – was ill-chosen as it gave conspirationalists yet another piece

of material to put into their speculations.

I used to live in New Mexico. Every once in a while there'd be a piece in the paper about how folks from the Northeastern states would call or write the state tourism department in Santa Fe and ask if they needed a passport to visit New Mexico. B-)

:P As a former New Mexico resident, you are no doubt familiar with the 1947 Roswell Incident which is celebrated every July 4 in the town itself. May your anal probes be painless.
