What's your music mood today ?

My music mood for the last week or so has been trying to put together a decent playlist of 2020, given that the curating algorithms and apps seem incapable of doing such a thing

Currently going though around 30+ albums 400 or so songs, multiple lists of recommendations (in media), and trying to find something remotely fresh and new. Lots of good stuff from people who have been round a while :)

So its anything from death metal, to pop, to country, to blues, to hiphop etc - and clearly anything recorded over the last 40-50+ years counts as a new release these days :)

Phoebe Bridgers and Cleo Sol jump to mind as two very listenable albums. Also Gorillaz new offering as always

However for something different I am enjoying Rina Sawayama - fits the bill as the newest (and most exciting) sound for me

Hi, i've recently discovered Lexington Lab Band on YouTube: has a rich variety of songs covers on many artists (put a look for).

I'm enjoying the sea shanty boom that seems to have been kicked off by a Scottish postman Nathan Evans recording a few in lockdown and putting them on tiktok and mushroomed into many bands recording versions of the Wellerman (this is the collaboration between him and a full band, I think my favourite version is Storm seeker's).

Also the odd fun thing that's come out of lockdown:

The Wellerman video is not available for viewing in the U.S. apparently. No problem. Enjoyed this one instead:

The second video you posted is a hoot.

That was the version I was referring to as my favourite, but I'm a sucker for most things with a hurdy-gurdy and a nyckelharpa on them.

Heard Bonnie Tyler interviewed and she flagged the second one up as one of her favourite covers of one of her songs.

I don't religiously update my mood here every day (I could) but recently I was enjoying watching The Pixies live in in London and REM's early days live on Youtube. Each totally awesome in their own ways and also having their influence somewhat ignored by many of us. When you come to a band late and then realise there were all those years before they made it huge etc. First I heard of REM was Losing my Religion. First I hear of Pixies was years after. Don't know why I keep missing things. Must be being in the wrong place with the wrong people listening/watching to the wrong media at the wrong time. I will never forget 1976/77 in England when all these bands suddenly appeared seemingly from nowhere - like magic - where had they been hiding etc. But much as I hate to offer commentary on stuff I have no expertise at all - why is it so hard to find good stuff with Spotify trends. You know good stuff like REM and the Pixies level

I mean, how many times can you listen to The Weeknd. No wonder he has so many billions of streams

There's a light beyond these woods Mary Margaret

Do you think that we will go there

And see what makes it shine, Mary Margaret

It's almost morning and we've talked all night

I know we've made big plans for 10 year olds

You and I

Have you met my new boyfriend Margaret

His name is John and he rides my bus to school

And he holds my hand - he's 14 he's my older man

We'll still be the best of friends the three of us

Margaret, John and I

Let's go to New York City Margaret

We'll hide out in the subways and drink the poets wine

Oh, but I had John so you went and I stayed behind

But you were home in time for the senior prom

When we lost John

The fantasies we planned well I live without them now

All the dreams we sang that we knew about

Well they haven't changed

There'll never be two friends like you and me

Mary Margaret

It's nice to see your family growing Margaret

Your daughter and your husband they really treat you right

But we've talked all night

Oh, what about those nights

That rode beyond our woods when we were ten

You were the rambler then

The fantasies we planned oh Maggie I live without them now

All the dreams we sang, we damn sure knew how

But I'll never change

There'll never be two friends just like you and me

Maggie can't you see ?

There's a light beyond your woods Mary Margaret

Stumbled on this today. Sending it out to wc Okies.

Absolutely beautiful.

In the late 1970s, around the time of this concert I guess, I was sharing a house in Berkeley with some guys. The daughter of a friend came around looking for her father, the father wasn't there, but she said I should tell him that she was on her way to an Emmy Lou Harris concert. She said it with sort of an implied question mark, figuring I probably would not know the name. She was right, but I decided to follow this youngster's advice and correct that gap. Good choice. ELH is a real pleasure.
