Hi,

1S is ok, especially if you raise regular with 3

card support .

3D is aggressive in with the spade single and

with this trump suit, you really dont want to play

3H on the 3 level opposite xx.

I do not completely understand your 3rd

question, certainly 2S by opener is not an

option, the same holds for responder

2S instead of 2H is also not an option.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Hi Wayne

1-2-4 was the simple auction - ironically you play 5 card majors so partner can support with 3 here with a singleton you look to have ruffing power!

1/. what do you think of the 1 spade bid?

An attempt to steal the contract and play it otherwise a poor bid

2/. I bid 3diamonds as a game try (after a weak response from p, I was still not willing to give up yet)

I would have bid 3 over 1 although the poor clubs and stiff in s are not positives my hand is still worth over 15/16 points. I would like to bid 2 and a half someting!

3/. would 2 spades have been a better bid or pass, instead of 3 diamonds

You made a valiant last attempt ptr wasn't listening!

Steve

I strongly disagree with 1. With weak hands, raise immediately.

The auction 1 1 1N 2 is forward going (not forcing) precisely because of the two step approach to showing the raise.

If your hand is worth only one bid, and you have support, show the support. Partners always seem to appreciate it

And it simplifies things enormously: look at this hand as an example.

North is worth only one bid, so he rejects the game try, afraid that he has already bid too much. But S has a game bid, not a game try, provided that S knows that north has a real raise, not a mere preference.

The auction, with most expert pairs, would be 1 2 4 (most experts eschew game tries on this kind of opening hand because showing the suit gives away far too much information, and game rates to have a play opposite many relatively indifferent holdings).

 The rule is simple. If you have a hand that readily qualifies for a 2 bid, ignore the spades, and bid 2. You have found an 8+ card major suit fit so:

1) tell partner, and

2) limit your hand
