Finch
1D. Longest suit at the lowest level... p.s. I always thought a swan was a 7411
whereagles
It comes to mind 1♦, followed by 4♥ (4NT if it comes back in 4♠). You can try for max pressure with 4♦. It's matchpoints, after all.
Fluffy
I have 2 options: 1♥ and 5♦. I ll go with the second one since I am in third.
Free
1♥, but I also like 5♦
cherdano
1♦.
hatchett
1♦, I am willing to rebid 4♥ so I don't see the need to distort with 1♥. A 5♦ opening has some attraction.
Gerben42
No the 7-4-1-1 is an eau de cologne hand, or only if it's 4♠ 7♥?
Blofeld
Fairly sure a swan is a 7411. Anyhow I'm opening this 1♦.
Echognome
My terminology is shakey. I have also heard hands like these called Marilyns... i.e. shapely.
pbleighton
5D, because of the spade void. I don't quarrel with 1D or 1H. Peter
pclayton
Reese described a swan as a 4=1=1=7 because the way the hand diagram looked on paper: KQxxxxAKJxxxx Pretty sure this comes out "Play Bridge with Reese". I think all 7-4-1-1's are collectively called swans now however. I would open the subject hand 1♦, but one of my regular partners probably opens it 4♥ if the colors are right. Seriously. MickyB
1♦. 5♦ is a distant 2nd choice. 1♥ is nowhere.
mike777
5D 1D close second choice.
whereagles
5D 1D close second choice. Funny to see the difference between 1♦ and FIVE♦ is thin :)
Limey_p
giraffe? 1♦
Kalvan14
1♦. If bidding comes back at 4♠, I'm willing to try a 4N
joshs
Is there a case for opening 2 or 3 diamonds and then bidding again??
MickyB
I think 2♦ must be better than 3♦ - you are hoping the opponents will come in so you can complete your description. I think this hand is too strong to bid it like that, make it KKQ and I'd consider it.
eamongall
[hv=d=n&v=b&n=sakqt9642hjdq9caq&w=shakt62dkt87642ct&e=s53h753daj53cj764&s=sj87hq984dck98532]399|300|Scoring: MPP - P - 5♦ - 5♠All Pass[/hv] I was playing MPs and felt it would be fun to roll the dice. I think 1♦ and willing to rebid 4NT is perfectly acceptable as well. Unfortunately there was a sting in the tail. Partner lead an obvious ♦A and our declarer made 13 tricks. Most of the field was in 4♠+2, so we ended up with a below average score anyway. All I could do was shrug.
