Try Control-W or use "Wide screen" command on the menu that appears when you click the big "View" button.

 

That changes the width of the window.

 

The maximize button only changes the height of the window.

 

Neither of these will have any effect unless your screen resolution is set to at least 1024x768.

Still a very small bug:

press ctrl-w to maximize the screen. The maximize button is highlighted, but is doesn't do anything.

press ctrl-w again. You now get the small and low window. The maximise button is noy highlighted and only gets highlighted when you move the cursor over it.
