K of club lead follwed by small to ace club followed by 3rd club ruffed in dummy.

First thing if diamond breaks the contract is trival. so diamonds should break badly. Would you take the trump reduction line and go down if trumps break well?

Would you do it if the contract is not dbled?

Also if west preempted 3D and east responded 3S, should west bid 3nt or 4D?

Note: the trump reduction line wont work if west is a alert and presumly worldclass defender who of cos will insert the king spade when a small spade is lead to dummy without thought :) .

For the trump reduction to work you have to ruff 3 times in hand and then get back to dummy to lead another card.

The best way to stop North inserting on the spade is to take the spade finesse before the first round of trumps. (Ace of hearts, heart ruff, diamond to dummy, heart master ruffed, spade.... not very difficult to insert). But then you go off on the alternative layout when the spade finesse is wrong and trumps aren't 4-0.

So which is more likely, the spade finesse is right AND North will misdefend AND trumps are 4-0, or the spade finesse is wrong AND trumps aren't 4-0?

I would say the latter, and I would have gone off.

[i have an agreement with my regular partners that after 3D - 3S opener rebids 3NT on any normal hand without spade support. This hand is so good for spades that I would probably cue hearts in support of spades, however, so I would bid neither 3NT nor 4D!]
