A Classic Remembered

Recommended Posts

I just heard, again, one of my favorite bridge stories, all true. Two friends of mine were playing Zeke Jabbour and, I believe, a client. One friend is a pro, and the other is a GLM.

The pro held this hand:

[hv=s=sak32hadakcakj982]133|100|[/hv]

He opened 2, heard 2 from partner (GF, waiting). 3 seemed safe, and partner bid 3NT. As a practical call, he leapt to 6.

First, any guesses as to partner's distribution???

A club lead hit the table. "This cannot be bad" the pro thought. Zeke bit hit pipe in half, though. Dummy hit:

[hv=s=sak32hadakcakj982]133|100|[/hv]

I would venture that NO ONE came up with this pattern. This is, of course, complete insanity.

In any event, the play was neat. On the club lead, Zeke popped Queen, won by the pro. The three top major cards were all cashed next, followed by the two top diamonds. No one ruffed anything, and diamonds split 2-2. Next came the club King, Zeke tossing the 10. The club Jack followed, Zeke again playing a high card (pip). With the deuce in hand, however, Zeke could not avoid the throw-in and had to lead a heart to dummy. Zeke held 2-5-2-4 pattern.

:lol:
