Overcall, X, or pass?

Pass. If you double, you deserve to hit partner with

x

Jxxx

KJxxx

xxx

who now takes the phantom sacrifice in 5 over RHO's 4. Overcalling 2 is less appealing; I need a much better suit for that. 2 has its merit, but I still think pass is the best. Pass does not deny a good hand; it only denies a hand that is suitable to bid on.

Partner will of course bid 4N then 5D to give you a choice if he has that hand :P

2 with DBL as a not especially close 2nd choice. 1NT would be my third choice (which should go a long way toward describing how I feel about Pass).

The fact of the matter is that it is quite likely that partner has exactly 3 hearts. If this is the case then there is a good chance you belong in a heart contract that you won't be able to find if you start with DBL.

The problem of this hand is the suit quality. If is better, there would be no doubt this is a 2 overcall. I think X would be a better choice than 2. Some people tend to make overcall as to be lead directing, this case X would be the right call too. If the partnership agreement does not require the suit quality for competitive bid at 1 or 2 level, 2H would be ok.

My partner chose to X. I thought this was an especially nasty problem. Pass risks missing game, 2H risks going for a number, X risks partner bidding too many diamonds and missing a 5-3 heart fit. I have no strong opinions about this one.

2 of course

And I have a wonderful 2 rebid if pd bids 2

I agree that having to overcall a 4 card suit, I better overcall the best one (wich is almost a 5 card one). But given that I almost always overcall on 6 card suits its a clear pass to me.

If you play equal-level correcion, this is really a no-brainer: double, and correct a 2 response to 2. If you don't play that, there is STILL a good case for double.

2 puts all the eggs into one basket. The only good thing about it is it obstructs a lot of LHO's possible bids.

I don't like passing either. Unless opps bid game (not very likely - I have a good hand), I'll be guessing what to bid a few levels higher, and AFTER opps exchanged more info. Not good.

I remember in the recent CTC from The Bridge World, there is a deal that overcalling 2H with weak 5-card suit immediately catching a 5-3 fit in hearts, thus makes it extremely easy to reach 4H, and perhaps it is the only legitimate way.

It's true that we are all taught not to put all eggs into one basket, but it is another story that the most likely game basket is 4H.
