kenrexford
[hv=s=s10hakjxxdaxckjxxx]133|100|[/hv] RHO, Dealer, opens 2H weak. Q1: What action, if any, do you take? Does vulnerability matter? Assume, for the sake of argument perhaps, that you pass. This would be passed around to partner. Assume then that partner balances with 2S. Q2: Assuming this auction, passed by Opener to you, NOW what action do you take? Assume again, perhaps again for the sake of argument, that you elect to leap to 3NT. This would be passed to partner, who apparently would bid 4D. This is interesting, as partner could have diamonds and spades and (1) bid Michaels (the way you agree to play), (2) bid 2S then diamond, (3) bid 3S and then diamonds, or (4) pretend no diamonds exist and just rebid spades. Q3A: What do you expect partner to have for 4D?Q3B: What action do you take over 4D?
Miron
Q1: pass, no matter of vulnerabilityQ2: 3NT is good idea, I like itQ3A: Parner knows that I have ♥ trapping pass (how elso I could bid 3NT). And he bids 4♦. 6-5? Sounds good.Q3B: 4♠. Difficult to make, but 4♥, 5♣, 5♦ are worser. And when he did not pass 3NT, he woun't pass 4NT
pbleighton
Well, I would have passed, leapt to 3NT, then cursed partner  Why didn't he bid Michaels? Maybe he has 6 diamonds and 5 spades. Bid 5D. Peter
Guest Jlall
Agree with pass, agree with 3N. I don't take too much inference from the fact that partner didn't michaels. If partner had a 5-5 9 count or so, I would expect a balance but would not expect a michaels bid. Of course, with 5-5 I would expect him to pass 3N. He is probably 6-5 or 5-6 for his pull with not much in the way of values. With 6-5 and good spades he would just bid 4S. I think I would just give up and pass here. mike777
1) 3clubs over 2h2) 5d over 4d I guess. I seem to have better luck just bidding my longest suits first, I wish my pickup partner on this hand was doing the same but........
han
Agree with Justin, partner is not good enough to use michaels but is very distributional. I pass.
kenrexford
Interesting comments, and refreshing. In practice, I passed first and then leapt to 3NT. When partner bid 4D, I also cursed. The winning action was 4S, as partner held much superior spades to diamonds. I felt that 4S was better, as partner held AKQJxx-void-Jxxxx-xx, but partner is a rookie, so 4D makes sense. At the table, I elected 4H, which I hoped to be choice, even allowing a retreat to 4NT. Partner NOW elected 4S, which is the prime spot, of course. The question I really had was what impact alternative auctions had for a non-rookie. Thanks for the insights. It was a neat problem.
