Bidding up

Here's good convention, we call IQ double. Your double is penalty or take out. For take out you have maximum of one spade. For penalty four spades. Partner can find out your double from his spades (0-1 penalty, 2+ T/O). The only case it fails is on 11+spade fit.

If I play this convention, double sounds good ( are better as trumps, vecause of ruffs). Also if partner pass this double (he has four spades), it could be quite good.

Otherwise pass.

But opps may very well have a 11+card spade fit hereso your convention may backfire big time.

What system were opps playing? Are they oldfashioned bidding 4 on opening strength? Or was 1 limited? If both are answered with no I bid 5, otherwise I pass.

What you call the IQ double we call a two-way double. There are a few auctions where it would be very handy to play them (2D multi P 3H x is another example). I've never actually played them because they rely on the opponents having their bidding, which is rarely the case.

It also applies at the 2-level after a Multi:

2 (p) 2 (dbl)*

* Opener will reveal what I have. Either hearts when he pulls to 2, or a take-out of hearts when he passes.

Sorry - they were playing SAYC, so 4 should be preemptive.

5C. Again you have a very offensive hand with a good suit and a void at favorable vulnerability. These are the type of hands that make for double game swings and excellent saves. Given the auction partner probably isn't loaded in spades, so I'm not worried about going for a number in a phantom. That number will likely be 100 (partner must have some values if they're going down and it's not a trump stack) instead of +100 which I can live with. If you throw in the fact that they will often take the push or that sometimes they can't X you when you're going down, 5C seems percentage.

5 looks clear

Double IQ or not IQ looks like a very nice way to practice playing 5 in a 4-3 fit. Not to mention when pd can't find a good bid over the double and decides to pass with something like JTxx, Kxx, Kxx, Kxx quite a perfect recipe for disaster.

Usually they have a 10 or 11 card fit on this auction...

5

When I play with a new partner, in a casual game, I usually say that I will play whatever my partner wants, but that I reserve the right to remove 3 things from the card and (with a good player) add up to 3 new things. If my partner gave me a card with IQ doubles on it, I would strike it... unless there were 3 other things of higher frequency and almost as much potential for self-destruction.

I would be prepared to play it in an ambiguous situation, as per multi, but not where the opps auction has been normal, and the only players who can be fooled about what is going on are us! Or have you never seen an 11 card fit before?

Ok, I bid 4NT which I agree was wrong - my thinking at the time was that pard would prefer clubs with equal length (as over an Unusual 2NT) but when I could have any 2 suits, he would presumably prefer diamonds with a 2533, hoping I could correct to hearts. Maybe a 0364 would be more appropriate for 4N in this situation.

The auction continued P-5-5 back to me, and now partner doesn't know your suits, but is likely to have some club support. Are you taking another bid? If you consider 4NT to be off the planet you may wish to ignore this ;)

5C is a no-brainer at this form of scoring.

On this auction, you could make anywhere between 8 and 13 tricks in clubs, and they could make anywhere between 9 and 13 tricks in spades.

Not sure I understand this logic. You could equally say he might bid 5C hoping you have diamonds and hearts and correct to 5D (in which case you would bid 5H). I agree with equal he'll prefer clubs, but even if hes 4-2 in the minors I want to be in clubs. If he's 3-2 I definitely want to be in clubs. If he's 5-2 it may not matter that we're in clubs given how good our clubs are.

Logic? I don't think there was any ;)

Strange, I'd always thought that was so obviously true that I never really bothered thinking about it :P

And yes, I agree that clubs is too likely to be the correct strain to justify 4NT.
