I AM SICK OF GETTING SUCKED INTO TOURNEYS

Three times in the last week I have been sucked into a tourney, either as a sub or as a player, without my prior permission.

THIS IS GETTING OLD. I do not volunteer to sub because I am well aware that I am not patient with unknown partners and know it is better not to play with them.

And, ANYONE can set up a team match and insert your name into it (it doesn't require an acknowledgment by the player like regular tourneys do).

I consider this type of behavior reprehensible. I should have my own choice whether I want to play or not... the fact that a director can just write my name in as a sub and have me sucked into a tourney THAT I DON'T WANT TO PLAY IN is wrong. Something should be done to the SW to prevent this from happeneing.

Pardon my rant.

I suggest you contact abuse@bridgebase.com and

let us know who sucked you in without your consent.

Forming team games and arranging for subs is

more efficient if permission is not required. As long

as this feature is not abused I think we are better

off this way.

In order to stop this from being abused, however, we

need to know who is doing the abusing.

You must be very popular and much in demand. :-)

No one has ever sucked me in a tournment against my will. But i have to admit I would be steamed if it happened. For one reason I am often on line but not at my computer. For another, this is very bad form. You can always discover who is tournment owner or director and report them. This is not acceptable behavior.

Actually, I am fairly popular... I get asked to play very often by people I do not even know...

For whatever reason people think I am more accessible than I really am... I rarely play with unknown people and almost never play tourneys unless they are short (12 boards or less). Same goes for team matches...

If someone asks me to play teams or tourneys, if I have any inclination to accept I always first ask how many boards? I do not want to be tied down for a long tourney on short notice.

Now, today I was in a chat room with one of my teammates working on our convention card when I was pulled into the tourney. The people at the table apparently all knew me (I was familair with only 1 person) and begged me to finish.... I called the director and asked him to replace me, but he never answered and I finished playing so as to not hold things up...

I was partnered with a novice player... not something I would want for myself but, out of courtesy to the rest of the tourney I did finish things up... it was only a few boards at least..

NONETHELESS...it should have never happened.. and it has happened a lot lately... People have discovered they can just write in a name...

Fred, sure I can report it every time it happens... and maybe it will never happen again to me, who knows? BUT, if it is happeneing to me, it surely must be happening to others. One time it was undoubtedly an honest mistake (someone was looking to round out a team game and suggested that I be asked but apparently was intrepreted to mean I had agreed) and the 3d time was meant as a joke and thats all well and good... but it's just too darn easy to abuse.

More rants on my part, sorry.

I agree with 2 over 1 about problem being sucked into teammatches.

I also understand the problem with making a smooth system as fred argues.

Perhaps one of the problems is that its very difficult/impossible to ask players in lobby if they can sub. So making it an option that host can two-way communicate with lobby will make it easier for host to make substitutions.

Problem is that host feel lot of pressure when one player loose connection and she/he must find substitution or cancel.

A few days ago I was for the first time forced into such a small team match. We were 3 forced at the same time - me and 'JAPIE2' and 'stemac51' - and we all tried to contact TD but got the info there were none. As none of us 3 intended to play - the tournament was not able to materialize. Excessive requests in tournament area to have that tourney cancelled - which was the result at the end.

I tried to find out which tourney I was sucked into - but impossible. The only info I was able to obtain was that there were 2 team-matches at that time set up for 8 boards. I was unable to see in which of those 2 I was sucked into as player - not for substitution - and due to that unable to report TD for harasment.

As there were no play I have no log-file. I try to send parts of my chat-log-file for 20031222 to abuse@bridgebase.com. In that I see some ID of players - but I have no knowledge whether any of those were host. As I remember hosts of the 2 tourneys were rather long ID's. But perhaps that logfiles will enable Uday to go into BBO logfile to find the relevant tourney and the name of host.

I had it to sometimes, and I really hate it!!! Even if you quit and login again, you can't do anything except play or quit!

Today I had the same thing with a misunderstanding I guess, but it's annoying. If everyone can suck you in a tourney, it's just not right. And reporting abuse isn't the right way, because damage is already caused. Why try to heal something if you can prevent it??? Just ask permission and all troubles are gone.

Ok, maybe the source code isn't made for such treatment (and that's a shame), maybe it's a lot of work to 'fix' it, but if it's done the proper way, everybody will be happy I guess.

I have been "drawn" into more tourneys than I can count on one hand without my permission. Like the rest of you I find it very annoying, and disruptive. I also have tried to contact the TD or tournament with not much help. One reply I got was, "come on bambi, we would do it for you!" Well, guilt got the better part of me so I stayed that one and played the last 5 boards.......but the other ones I announced I could not play and logged off. It's very unfortunate this happens, not sure what can be done about it.

The "what to do about it" is to report it to abuse@bridgebase.com. While in the tourney, click on the tourney button and find the tourney you are in, and then get the nickname of the tournment owner.

Word of caution, however, if you "clicked" on the substitute button suggesting you are willing to substitute in a tournment, you might get sucked in at anytime. What we are talking about is not that situtation. If you had wanted to substitute and then decide that you no longer want to... be sure to go back and click the button again to remove your name from the list.

Subbing in the latest beta is absolutely totally completely fabulous.

The system pops up and asks if you can still sub before dropping you into the tourney.

And this really blew my mind, I went to call director to get a sub, and a pop-up window asked for the reason. I clicked on 'need a sub for partner' and a list of available subs appeared. I selected one, clicked OK, they accepted and we were back in play. Beautiful. I never even got the director involved.
