This summer a similar hand caused quite an uproar at a Dutch bridge club, except that it was a 25-count and favorable at IMPs. One of the players decided to pass and was the only one to go plus (+200 I believe, for a nice gain). The guy who did it later said that he thought it was a "bad 25-count", which lead to some hilarious comments.

Anyway, passing could be right but I would make the mainstream choice of showing a balanced 21-count. If it doesn't exist then I just show a balanced 20-count, after all, this is a "bad 21-count" ;).

i would bid 2nt but i have the feeling that database or simulation will tell us that 2nt or 3nt in that situation goes down often.

Because close game with 13 pts to the left of the strong hand usually dont make.

It mostly depend of the endplaying opportunities. and on that side i dont like the hand too much.

If 2NT is 16-18 then I bid 3NT.

I'm not doubling then cue-bidding then bidding no trumps. Partner might think I'm interested in playing somewhere else.

There was a pretty similar hand I posted several months ago that had a 22 count with AKQxx in RHO's weak 2 bid. This thread was circulated to a number of real good players and a lot of them passed. I was amazed at their action, but if you generate a few hands, pass generally turns out best. You have no trick source, and all honors are sitting over you.

This situation is even more extreme; LHO has an opening bid.

Unless someone snuck in a pinocle deck, how do we ever expect to score anything close to 9 tricks in 3N?

I pass.

missing game... missing game.... am I the only one to see a partscore battle in here? :(.

ok you were mostly right, 4 can make:

[hv=n=sjxxhj10xxxdcq9xxx&w=sxxxhakxdqxxxca10x&e=sxxxxhxxdjxxxcjxx&s=sakqhqxxdak10xxckx]399|300|[/hv]

I almost bid a very clever 1NT, it had the advantage of playing a very good partscore contract, and an easy discover of a partner's 5 card major since he will likelly prefer to play in 2M than 1NT whatever he has. But it would be too clever I guess, after 1NT-ps-2-ps I might try 3 to invite to 4, and it may very well be passed out hehehe.

Looks like 4 should always make.

Oh well, got this one wrong. I'd be trying to collect the 3rd undertrick (in vain) against 1.
