empty spot to fill 1d-1M--1nt ?

Recommended Posts

Empty spot to fill out. playing 1c 15 + forcing

1d --1 M ---1nt ?

Could be used to show C+D with longer C. Seems much too tame for me.

Could be used to show 2 pts range Nt openings

like 1nt 12-13

1d--1M--1nt 14-15

1c---1d---1nt 16-17

Red we could switch playing 12-14 red is a bit annoying for me.

White we could use mini-nt

Any other options ?

PS our 1d opener is natural could be 2 card if 18-19 bal.

Can't really answer this without knowing the rest of the system, but some thoughts:

(1) 1NT rebid could be 18-19 balanced. There are a lot of advantages to staying low on these auctions (stop lower if partner has garbage, slam bidding is easier, partner can show some shapes below 3NT more easily, etc)

(2) It's helpful to be able to distinguish between a "good" and "bad" raise of the major. This lets you stop in 2M a lot more frequently, since neither side has to push for game (you're not bidding past 2M as opener with a nice 13 plus singleton, and partner also doesn't have to try for game over the bad raise since you won't have a nice 13 plus singleton).

(3) It can be useful to have ways to bid hands with 6+4. You can't really bid 2 on these hands and also on hands with 5+4 (or even 5+3), and expect partner to make right decisions. A lot of precision players just automatically bid 2 with this shape, but there are times when the club fit is important.

(4) The "bridge world death hand" of 6+, 3-card major support, and extras is pretty annoying and it'd be nice to have a way to deal with it. Either of suggestions (1) or (2) might help here since (1) frees up 2NT rebid and via (2) you can show a good raise and then rebid 3.

(5) You could use a bid to show a true three-suiter short in partner's major. Without this, it can be tough to find a heart fit over 1-1-2, since 2 here is 4th suit.

Specifically,

1-1-1NT

could be used to include hands with 5+ diamonds and 4 hearts that could not reverse, as well as 1=4=4=4 hands. This is especially useful if your style is to respond light even to a 1D opening limited to 14.

I usually use the 1NT bid as a "catchall bid" for hands that cannot rebid naturally clubs or diamonds NOR have the distributional strength to reverse naturally higher than 2D.

As a consequence, opener's rebid of 2C GUARANTEES 5 diamonds and 4/5 clubs, as well as the 2D rebid by opener guarantees 6+ diamons (exceptionally a GREAT 5 bagger).

=============================

All in all, not such a big deal, but it's useful to be able to show 4 hearts, and it is VERY useful to be able to discriminate whether pard has a canapè ghand in the minors or whether he has longer diamonds.

You play a strong club but have 18-19 balanced in your 1 opening? Interesting...

After 1:1

1NT = Both minors

2 = 4 hearts

2 = 6

2 = Good raise; Or both minors, strong - whichever you prefer. Could probably make it 2 way...

After 1:1

You can use 1NT and 2 to distinguish between canape and not

its not really strong clubs really just that our 1c opening is forcing 15+ and we dont use positive negative response (we dont need it :) )

1 --15-17 bal or 20 + bal

2 clubs 16+

3 any GF hands. except 1 suited with a long minor

4- 15-17 with 5 cM unbalanced.

So basically 1d is always unbalanced natural 12-22. unless if 18-19 bal

The first plan was to play

1d---------1h relay GF or nat

1s nat NF.

1nt nat NF

2c nat NF

and over the 1h relay

1s nat 12-18

1nt---clubs

2c --- diamonds

2d at least 3h

2h at least 3h 15-18.

2s GF with 4s relay type

2nt 18-19 bal

3c GF with 4s relay type

the rest is all 4s GF

Basically its the same tructure on our 1M opening.

with opener 2nd bid as forcing we prefer to open 18-22 pts hand naturally instead of 1c.

But since the relay on 1d need to be different im expecting a lot of mistake in my casual partnership i figured it might be better to play 1d as omnibus.

Like since our 1M or our 1c-1d-1M are all unbalanced.

our nt rebid could have 5M.

opening 1d with 5M balanced seems interesting. especially if we could canape style bid the maj at the 2nd level.

1d--1nt bal

2h 5h bal to play.

just that our 1d isnt limited so its annoying.

There is no invitationnal bid anywhere in our system but on 1d there is so im expecting a lot of bidding mistakes.

Having a 3rd nt range seems cool.

rebidding 1nt to show 4h seems a bit tame.

minimum with both minor are just not important enough to warrant a precious bid at the 1 level. IMHO this is imp.
