badderzboy
Playing last night, I bid a small slam based on Losing trick Count which fortunately made but was it sensible to bid it as no-one else in the 16 matchs did? HandsVul N/S Dealer N NS KxxxH VoidD KJ10xxC AQxx SS AH K98xxD 97642C K8Playing ACOL partner opens 1D , RHO overcalls 1H which means Ptr could be 4144 (suit below singleton) or more likely 5+ diamonds I bid 4NT (RCKB) and receive 5H (2 KC no Q) and place contract in 6D... Was it right to try it and was there a better route to it? Steve
Codo
Hi Steve, 6 Diamond made, so you was right. Bridge is simple.6 Diamond with open cards has a fair chance:You just loose if te trumps are 3-0 or there is a ruff avaiable for the opps. So again, you had been right. To the downsides:Blackwood is a tool to AVOID bad slams. It should be the last tool after you found out, that slam is possible. So with your hand is ihmo no good idea to jump to 4 NT. If I had envisoned the slam potential of this hand, I had used any forcing Diamond raise avaiable. For me this had been 2 Diamond, as I play inverted minor even after interference: 1 Diamond (1h) 2 Dia2 Sp 3 NT (Spade stop, C+H Stop, Minimum)4 Club 4 H (Cue, SI4 S 4 NT 5 H 6 D Okay, not very elegant, but had worked too.I think, someone has to "see" the slam potential after the fit is established. And this clearly is the opener with his big fit and his void in opps suit.. From your side, it is not so clear: Okay, you stop all suits besides diamonds. A Heart shortage from Part is quite sure, a big fit too. But this is not enough for a direct jump to 4 NT. IF pd looks a a singelton Heart, you will just fail in 6 Diamond. Kind Regards Roland
