abstain. I strongly object to 1C. I can think of almost no auctions where I do not have a rebid headache on the first or second rebid. I would open 1N with anyone, but especially in an indy.

2C

1 NT would be an underbid, showing 12-14,

and anything else is also not very appealing.

You could of course Pass, but it is quite likely

that this will end the auction.

Partner will assume you hold 12-14 with no heart

stopper.

You could also DBL, but do you know what DBL means

to partner (SupportX, Spades or Penalty)?

With kind regards

Marlowe

If you play that double would be take-out, partner should realise that you may have a heart-club 2 suiter, and not be able to double for penalty.

Hence pass. However, I also would have opened 1NT, to avoid getting end-played in the bidding like this.

 Playing with an unknown supposed BBO expert in an individual tourney

FIRST --- had you agreed ANY system with "expert" ??

1. IF not I assume sayc applies -- SO I would have opened 1NT -- just to avoid rebid problems :(

2. NOW I have REALLY made a rod for my own back -- so like Jlall I too ABSTAIN

3. But practically NOW (having made a HUGE mistake opening 1 I will pass

I might open 1NT in an individual. But not playing with anyone I know or respect.

This is a beautiful hand for suit play, which also has no particular reason to want to declare NT. It has no rebid problem, as I am happy to rebid 2H after 1S from partner. Opening 1NT on this hand will miss game too often for my liking.

I don't believe I have ever opened 1NT with a 2425. It would have to be something not strong enough to reverse, and also very NT-ey. Something like Kx KJxx Qx KQJxx, not a prime 16-count with no tenaces.

As it is, I pass over 1H and don't consider this to be a problem.

Pass, and I too would have opened 1NT.

I think bidding 1NT now should usually be 18-19 balanced.

A 1N opening is wrong with this hand in spite of the rebid issues. The hand is very suit oriented and your doubletons aren't strong.

Has the auction improved your hand? The heart holding is now more like AK than KQ.

I'll take a small position on this and rebid 2N. Pass is a 2nd choice.

:( :D :P I hereby promise that in any future indy event I will ALWAYS open the south hand for 1NT :P :P :P

Just for fun, how would you suggest that a competent pair playing plain vanilla SAYC bid the hands after a 1 opener by south?

P.S. I enjoyed FrancesHinden and pclayton's comments, and I tend to agree with that analysis. One thing I do know for certain: never open 5-4-2-2 shape for 1NT when playing the 10-12 HCP Kamakazi NT opening. The results are too often brutal. The Law of Total Tricks does not protect you to the normal extent as there is a significantly higher probability of deals with a low number of total tricks.

From the answers here it looks that the experts prefer Pass to 1NT after this start. I really wonder why. You hope that partner will balance with a take out double and you can make it penalty?

Does 1NT not show something extra or does it just show good stop(s)?

If 1NT shows extra's then I least you do show some of your values by bidding 1NT now?

1NT now shows less than an opening 1NT hand, probably 13-14 with a good stopper. This hand is MUCH better than that so the 1NT rebid is out of the question. I think that the 2NT rebid, although a bit of an overbid, is better.
