barmar
This morning I logged into the forums, read a few forums, then logged out to go to a meeting. When I logged in after the meeting, none of the other forums were marked as having unread messages, even though I hadn't caught up in them. It seems like logging out marks all messages as having been read.
Elianna
It's not just when you log out, it's when you leave your computer for some time. My theory is that when the forums detect your presence, it "keeps detecting" your presence for fifteen minutes (or so), and everytime you do something, it renews that fifteen minutes (making a complete session). Once the forums no longer detects your presence, it marks everything as read (probably on the theory that if you haven't read it, you don't want to, and resets the setting). I don't really think that this is a good thing, but I think that it's what Invision (the makers of the forum software, I think) seems to have set in. And logging out ends your session, I guess. barmar
I think your case is just a special case of mine. If you're idle for a while, it automatically logs you out.
inquiry
There is an option when you log onto the forum to either log you out after some time period of inactivity (I am thinking it is 30 minutes), or to allow you to stay logged in as long as you are "online" (same browser window open that visited the forum). If you have the time out, then the situation Elianna described occurs. If you stayed logged on, then the situation Barmar mentioned occurs. No, I'm still logged in. I have only ever had to log into BBO twice: The first time, and when I used Adam's computer.
barmar
There is an option when you log onto the forum to either log you out after some time period of inactivity (I am thinking it is 30 minutes), or to allow you to stay logged in as long as you are "online" If there is, I can't find it. I see the "Remember me" option in the login screen, which automatically logs you in when you go back to the site from a computer that has the cookie saved, is that what you're talking about? It might have the effect of preventing the idle-time logout, because when you click on something it will automatically log you back in behind the scenes. If this is correct, you're actually logged out after the timeout, you just can't tell except for the fact that everything gets marked as read.
