inquiry
This is a rgb hand with a wide ranging discussion that seems to miss the point. Over a 1H opening bid, what do you bid? S: K9xH: KxxD: AKxC: J9xx
hrothgar
I consider this a clearcut/easy pass. I would not be surprised to see a number of people prefer a double.I would expect most of these folks to either be (a) Europeans, who have different styles regarding doubles.(:) Players who don't trust they partner to understand how to balance. Free
Don't say you bid with this hand!? I don't see any problem here, so I pass. It's not because you have some HCP that you need to bid...
inquiry
The panel has spoken here, and clearly they are all right. In the rec.game.bridge posting, this hand made a takeout double. His partner bid spades first, and later bid diamonds. This hand then took preference back to spades. Of course, what happened was. 1) 3S went down too many 2) partner had longer diamnonds than Spades, but bid Spades first 3) dbler thought partner should bid longer minor first 4) lots of discussion about how to respond with 4S and 5/6 diamonds All of this missed the point the people here got right immediately. This hand is not a takeout double. Simply pass. If you belong in the auction, your partner (or maybe you) will get a chance to balance later. Indeed it was a boring little hand, but the discussion on rgb made me think it might be a useful one to raise the issue that you don't need to bid immediately just because you have some hcp. Which might lead some of our experts here to the opportunity to discuss balancing. Ben
