I think this is actually quite a good ten-count. The heart spots are excellent, spade spots are not bad, the diamond queen is at least with the ace (AQ is often two quick tricks, much better than an isolated Ax and Qx). If I'm ever going to open a 3-6-2-2 ten count at the one-level, I think this is the hand for it.

If I don't open 3-6-2-2 ten counts at the one level, how come I'm not playing 5-10 weak twos?

For me it is neither a 1 nor a 2 opening, but when I MUST open it, I would bid 1. For a w2 I dislike the overall strength with 8 pts. outside my long suit and with Qxx in the other major. I may be completely beside the lane but I would pass and hope to get a 2. chance.

I agree so you are not alone beside the lane ! :)

1

It's not even worth 26 ZAR points, is it?

2 for me.

Eric

25 ZAR points....

But, I upgrade it due to T9 or hearts and 98 of spades. Change it to

Qxx

QTxxxx

AQ

xx

and I would not open it 1.

But don't you also downgrade it for the AQ tight in ?

I would probably bid 1 Heart

If it's a choice between opening with a 1-bid as opposed to a 2-bid, I prefer to have the 2-bid emphasize more values in the bid suit or at least to not have all that much outside of the suit.

Hi everyone

Multi 2D. Not even close to a one bid and I play a Big Club system.

One Ace and three Queens is closer to 9.4HCP in my 'tie breaker' HCP method.

A=4.3, K=3.1, Q=1.7 and J=.9

Replace the spade Qxx with the KJx of spades and I open 1H.

It also depends on the system, I would open 1H playing Acol.

Regards,

Robert

3rd seat 1H or 2H both seem reasonable.

1st seat might stretch to open 1H if playing strong club, but I still lean towards a pass.

2nd seat, always a pass (2nd seat an opening must always be FULL, and a weak 2 must always be textbook, the chances of misguiding pard are to high when we make an ill-descriptive bid in 2nd seat).

2H has many many flaws:

- bad suit: this is bad from 1000 viewpoints (opening lead, easier -psychologically -fotr opps to double us when they have to top honors in the suit, etc etc)

- too much defense and wasted honors

- 6322 crappy shape.

I might open 2H only in a system such as Fantoni:Nunes, wghere suit quality and ODR are not requirements for a 2-level opening; and even then, I would not feel safe.

Opening 1H depends on the partnerships requirements for a minimum opener.

In a "standard"-ish system, the concrete (not hypothetical) risk is that pard, with some degree of fit and a god hand, might take off towards an unmakeable slam.

Passing such hands is not a bad word B)

But give me the same hand with a 3-6-3-1 (stiff club), and I'd stretch to open 2H in 1st/3rd seat (still a pass in 2nd seat).
