Using book examples for mentoring / BIL classes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm hoping to mentor and assist in the Beg/Intermediates Lounge and there are some great example deals throughout a number of bridge books on a wide range of subjects I own that have helped me a great deal. ( too many to name!).

As the lessons are at no cost would I be in breach of any copyrights if I use the material to help others.

If you would need permission where would you get it from and also should I mention where the deal comes from in the session (some advertising per se)?

It isn't rocket science to change the deals a little and still keep the substance :P

Any views from experienced teachers would be most welcome?

Hi Steve!

I used to change the suits or cards within the suits when it did not influence the bidding or play. A bit fishy perhaps... For compensation I recommended books or programs in the course and I know that some baught those :P

I am no expert, but ...

The no-cost element of the BIL will have little impact on the copyright situation. I only know of Richard Pavlicek who actually distinguishes between making money and not with his website material.

My view, as I have been in this situation, is that it is OK to take a single hand from a complete book and I will give the author a credit. If I am going to take more than a hand, and especially if I am going to essentially paraphrase the author's thoughts for the hands, then I seek permission from the author and/or publisher (I'm lucky that I know a bridge publisher who has good contact with many of the top authors).

Hands themselves are essentially not copyrighted, it is the commentary surrounding them that is the problem. However, if an author has constructed a hand to illustrate a specific point, then this is really his creation.

So very often I will use Vugraph sessions, or hands from them, especially if I was watching and the commentators mentioned a "feature".

You can see how I've done this on my BBO BIL pages.
