Last Train and the Like

Recommended Posts

Last train convention I understand was originally Last Train to Clarksville, named after a song by the Monkees. (Spelling changed with thanks to my editor. :) ) This makes me wonder if there might not be other great conventions awaiting song titles such as:

"Sail On" convention:

Used by overbidder's who ignore partner's stop bids and blindly bid to unmakeable contracts.

"Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" convention:

Any convention forgotten in the heat of battle.

Bet this group knows lots of conventions that should have song titles. :P

Go for it.

Hit the road jack....

for a bid of 5NT in notrump in Misiry asking opener to bid slam in the suit in which he holds the jack (or extra legnth)....

"to dream the impossible dream"

similiar to the sail on convention mentioned earlier where someone refuses to accept slam is hopelessly on the current bidding and forces to slam.

"Help!" by the Beatles when pard puts you in a complex high level contract you doubt is going to make and the opps would clearly not have made their contract.

"We are the Champions" by Queen, when the opps double your save and it makes!

"Take me Out to the Ball Game" when pard mistakes your high level take out double for a penalty double and leaves it in, opps making.

Any convention forgotten in the heat of battle.

;)

>Relax, don't do it" when partner invites slam and you don't have the values

Eric Rodwell is responsible for the naming of (and to the best of my knowledge the development of) Last Train to Clarkesville.

He has a great sense of humor (though I doubt that everyone would appreciate it) and he also happens to be a very talented musician (piano).

Carol King "You've got a friend":

--> When you're down and doubled, and you need another hand,

and nothing, nothing is going right.....

Rolling Stones "Criss Cross man":-->Baby. Ooh! Baby- Save me. Ooh! Save me. Ah!

Jimi Hendrix "Stepping Stone":

--> I sure got the blues this morning, baby

Yeah! and I'm here to tell you about it

So you might as well pick up on it!

I'm a man....

(Richard, but who cares ;) ) Blackwood, looking for a partner: "Someone There For Me"

--> Could you be the only one for me,

Take good care and see that all I need is someone to be there for me.

Would you stay around if times got bad?...

Ringo Starr "Puppet", and Sandie Shaw "Puppet on a String"

......
