Echognome
[hv=d=e&v=e&n=sq85h72d865ckq874&s=sk964hakjdq3cat65]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] East opens a weak (12-14) NT. You do play penalty doubles don't you? If you double, West bids a natural 2♦ for rescue and NS take it from there. I have to admit that the original problem had NS vul and WE not, but since I had to place the deals into an 8 board set, this hand got screwed up. Anyway, I'll let the others tell you how they bid it.
Cascade
(1NT) Dbl (2♦) 3♣All Pass Dbl is around 15+ 3♣ is just competitive Double would be for takeout and double and then bid would show a stronger (GF) hand.
inquiry
We got a little carried away.. our bidding was... (1NT)-PAss-(Pass)-DBL*(pass)-Pass-(2♦)-Pass(Pass)-3♦-(Pass)-3♠(Pass)-4♠ Explaination, my balancing double showed a minor one suiter, or a major two suiter. 3♦ was forcing. I thought that a 3♠ bid would both deny a major two suiter (I would not bid beyond 3♥ just in case our suit is hearts-so thus, a one suiter with clubs). 3♠ isnt horrible, and 4♣ would be ok. This was a bit tuff on Hannie and maybe not even very good logic by me. IF Hannie had ♠'s, he would bid over 1NT. So I probably should bid 4♣ instead of 3♠. But I thought all he might need is a ♠ value for 3NT. Note, Hannie had 2♣ over 1NT to show ♣ and eihter one of the major, and since he was short in diamonds for his 3♦ I thought he might not have clubs. Elianna
(1nt)-x-(2♦)-pass(pass)-x-(pass)-3♣(3d)-pass - (pass) - xall pass The first was penalty, second takeout, third penalty. We were among the pairs that had this with them vuln.
Guest Jlall
I don't understand why they didnt bid 3D against us? Ours went 1N X 2D 3C PASS(why not 3D?) 3D p 3S p 4S. We probably would have hit them in 3D similar to elianna's auction had they bid it. My immediate 3C was an overbid and so was 3D. When we had no diamond stopper we were scrambling around for a fit. Cascade
I double checked they didn't bid 3♦ against us either. If they did I confess it is more likely that we would bid 4♣ than hit 3♦. Our methods are not optimized to penalize with xxx opposite Qx in trumps. On second though with Qx in diamonds I think defending 3♦ undoubled is more likely than bidding 4♣. Echognome
After watching 3♦ get hit, I noticed the colours and from there on didn't bid 3♦. Hence the confusion. Soz.
hrothgar
At our table, the auction went 1NT - float. Free had a double available to him showing 4+ Spades and 4+ cards in another suit. I'm not sure why he prefered to pass... I'd expect that the auction would go (1NT) - X - (2♦) - 2♠ I'm not firmly convinced that 2♠ is better than pass
Free
Because of the colours, I didn't want to show a 2-suiter. I rather prefer to play them down, than to get us in a wrong contract...
