pclayton
[hv=d=w&v=e&n=sj98xxhak8xxdxxcx&s=satxxhxxdj9xcqjxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] LHO passes as does pard. RHO opens 1♦ and you hear 3♣ on left alerted as a fit jump. Pard tries 3♦ which has to be for the majors (although what would double be?) and you rest in 3♠. 1. ♦8 (3rd / low) to the Ace2. ♣K3. ♣ to the Ace and you ruff in dummy. Take it from there. By the way, I screwed this up at the table - was still recovering from a Vegas weekend. But I gave this to my regular pard and he placed EVERY single honor card and pegged the distribution perfectly. See if you can do the same.
Guest Jlall
I am not good enough to peg every honor card, or even the distribution. I will say lho is 4-6 in the minors (0-2-5-6 and he would bid more most likely). He's either 1246 or 0346. He has the ace of clubs and the K of diamonds. RHO is balanced and didnt open 1N and we're missing 24 HCP so they are 11-13 or 10-14. LHO has the DK and CA, so he can have the stiff K of spades, or the SQ and a heart honor, or the QJ of hearts. The danger on this hand is if I hook the spade they win and return a club giving their partner a ruff. The only layouts consistant with RHO having the KQ of spades are KQx xxxx AQxx Kx and (less likely) KQxx xxx AQx Kx. With that lho might have opened, or might have bid more, so I will rule it out. So I can make a discovery play of cashing the AK of hearts. If lho drops the QJ I play RHO for the KQ of spades. If not, I will play ace and a spade. Al_U_Card
[hv=s=sqxhjxdkxxxcaxxxx]133|100|The fit jump shows this type of hand, does it not? So opener is 2443 with the rest [/hv]

inquiry
We will assume they play 15-17 1NT *you didn't say* We will assume WEST has at least five clubs and likely 4♦ for his fit jump (5-6 also possible I guess but unlikley he is to sell out with the with 6-5 come alive hand.. ) so lets call WEST 6-4 in the minors. Leaving him with three major cards. Since EAST will not have five or six hearts, two of WEST majors must be hearts. The last could be a spade or a heart, but with a spade void, he also might bid again. Assuming for the problem the diamond King, if ACE is honest is with WEST. IF WEST had KQxx he would start an honor, So he has KT8x(x). We know about the club ACE-KING. If WEST lacked any major honor, EAST would be balanced 17 hcp. So WEST has either a heart honor or a spade honor. We don't know which. But we do know that it is safe to cash two hearts to find out what his heart holding is. Why, because EAST can not have either five or six hearts. If WEST follows suit twice with small hearts, you know his only spade is the king. With SP-K, H-QJ, D-AQ, C-K East would open 1NT. If WEST follows heart low once, and then with a heart honor, you know the same thing (if east had both spade honors and one or more heart honor, he has a 1NT opener). pclayton
If you cash the ♥AK, LHO will play 10-J. But I haven't seen the most important theme stated yet.....
Guest Jlall
If you cash the ♥AK, LHO will play 10-J. But I haven't seen the most important theme stated yet..... Then I play a spade to the ace, expecting LHO to drop the Q or K. Even if RHO has falsecarded at trick 1 with AK that makes it even more likely LHO has a stiff spade honor. Not sure what the most important theme is, this is pretty close to 100 % though.
mikeh
If West is 1=2=4=6, we cannot afford the discovery play in ♥. We cash AK and West follows with (say) QJ. If we play ♠ to the A and then cash the ♣ to pitch a ♦, east wins and cashes a high trump and then exits a ♦, tapping dummy down to 1 trump and we need two trump in dummy to establish the ♥ and enjoy them. Not cashing the ♣ allows them to win the second ♠ and you are either down off the top (2♠, 2♦ and a ♣) or, if you dropped a ♠ honour, they win the ♦Q and exit a ♦ once again tapping dummy. If we play AK ♥ and ruff with the 10, west can overruff with a stiff honour and cash a high ♦ and lead a ♣. It seems to me to be best to assume that East is 3=4=4=2 and that he lacks one of the ♠ cards, hence no 1N (or both of the ♥ cards). So I play ♠A, AK♥ ruff a ♥ (which is known to be safe) and cash my ♣ pitching a ♦ and tapping east. If he began with any 3♠, he cannot stop me ruffing another ♥ while I retain dummy's last trump. My guess is east is Kxx Jxxx AQxx Kx and west is Q Qx Kxxx Axxxxx

pclayton
LHO did have the stiff ♠Q. Mike got it right: the important aspect is that after the ♠A, you have to play ♥AK and RUFF a heart. At the table, I ruffed the club, played the ♠J (RHO didn't cover; although he might with KQx) and took the diamond pitch right away. No good! RHO ruffed, cashed the ♠K and punched dummy with the diamond which took away my late entry to enjoy the 5th heart. Down 1. But still a 2 IMP gain; the other table played 3♥ after 1♦ - pass - 3♦ - 3♥ - AP for -2. Oh well.
