han
There are several possible situations that all require a different answer. I will consider IMPs first, then MPs. 1) IMPs, you are in 1NT, the field is in 4M which may or may not make. Solution: play safe, the overtricks are unlikely to matter. 2) IMPs, you are in 1NT, the field is in 4M making. Solution: now surely overtricks are unlikely to matter. Play safe to make your losses small. 3) IMPs, you are in 1NT, a large portion of the field will make 170 in a major suit partscore. Solution: now it becomes more interesting to play for overtricks. Still, you are probably in a bad spot and it is important not to go down and lose a whole lot. 4) MPs, you are in 1NT, the field is in 4M which may or may not make. Now it is entirely clear that you should make the contract and overtricks are absolutely irrelevant. 5) MPs, you are in 1NT and the field is in 4M making. Solution: no matter what you do, you get a 0. 6) MPs, you are in 1NT and a large portion of the field will make 170 in a major suit partscore. Solution: now overtricks are everything. Play all out.
