flytoox
Non vs Vul, you hold: S: AK98 H: ATXXX D: QX C: AQ Pd is the dealer and opened 4h, RHO came in with 5d. What do you bid?
luke warm
oh man, what a choice.. i guess i'd double, it could possibly be the only plus we'd make after this bidding
flytoox
come on, man. 5h is the bottom line for you. isnt it?
JRG
It's not that 5 Hearts is "bottom line". Sure we can make 5H, but that's not the question. The question is: "Can we make 6H? Can we beat them two tricks?" We better not have a heart loser, or partner has taken leave of his senses. Here is where partnership agreements come in -- can partner hold a diamond control (Ace or King)? It has to be really "gambling" if one bids 6H expecting diamond shortness (despite the 5 diamond overcall). I think my gamble would be that we can beat 5D by at least two tricks; that is, I double. [And no, I do NOT lead a heart!!!]

luke warm
if vulnerability is switched it no longer pays to double (assuming it ever did)... now it's a choice between 5 and 6H, because partner is going to pass... i think 5H is better btw, it's not that 5H was 'bottom line', it's that i think 6H is a gamble and 5D doubled is a better score for us than making 5H
Free
There are 2 problems here: when do we make 5 or 6 and when do they go -2? if CK is behind, they probably go -1, and we won't make 5H. I assume our rho has AKJ of D. If not, they'll go -2, so I'll double ;D

luis
[Gambling mode on]6d if this is doubled vigorously by LHO showing a diamond void I might bid 6NT and now go lead a diamond :-) If this is not doubled then we may have a play in 6h maybe pd is short in d's maybe they think I have a void in diamonds and lead something else.[Gambling mode off]

As you said, if you bid 6h with confident, or by cue bid 6d, showing a void which doesnt exist, then it may persuade open leader swith to sth else, say club. I bid 6H then sb left the table and we redealed the hand. So I asked pd, do you have singleton in Diamond? Pd answered yes:)
