Results and adjusted scores

Recommended Posts

I tried to direct two tournaments on BBO. Because they were very small (2 and 3 tables) everything was more conspicious. I divide my opinions and suggestions into several parts. Excuse my imperfect English, 1st subject is RESULTS AND ADJUSTED SCORES.

1) Average minus is usually -3 IMP, on BBO 0 IMP. But not enough: such result is treated as PASS ! If the results on the board are 690, 650 and Ave--, then average IMPs should be +1 and -1 on tables 1 and 2 for NS (-1, +1 for EW) and -3 for both on table 3. Programme has computed 6.5, 5.5 and 0 subsequently. Ave results may not be included into the average of IMPs for other tables.

2) After awarding adjusted score nothing changes in the table's movie. E.g. Ave-- remains there. In movies and travellers on .../myhands some results were changed, the others were not.

3) After tournament I have played I found different results (percent) on particular boards in movie and on .../myhands. The difference was till 9 percent in tournament with 248 pairs. The final percentage didn't agree with any of these two. We have one Ave-- (out of time when last trick played), maybe we became some adjusted score, but I have no message about it neither by tournament nor after it.

4) I have played (3rd October) 4 boards in Main club and 16 boards in tournament. On .../myhands there was only 15. I looked at my partner's results: ok 20. Back to me: now 20, but inside still only 15 ! Only next day are all results there.

Summary of 2 to 4: Saving of results is someways incompatible.

5) I didn't find any way to save the final ranking of tournament as a text file.

After the touney, you can go to the myhand site, go to the linked tournment results (webpage)

http://69.56.183.98:81/tourneyresults/

From there you can "save" the results to your computer. Just open the lin file with NOTEPAD and cut and paste whatever part of it you want.

Click on the link above

Find the tournment you want in the list of tourments (results only stay a few days, so do right after event).

Click on the tourney and choose the "save" option instead of the open one.

After you save, choose "notepad" from the accessories (START BUTTON, the Programs, then accessories, then notepad). From notepad, open the file you just saved. There is some stuff in there that makes it display correctly, but the names and results are there. Delete the stuff you don't want, or copy the stuff you do. (Highlight, then under edit choose "copy" for instance).

I don't remember the details of how we deal w/averages but i will take a look

While the tourney is in play, the movie changes for the affected players. If anyone else cares, they can exit and reenter the table. Myhands is updated once, at the end of the tourney. It is not updated again, no matter how many times adjustments are made.

3) After tournament I have played I found different results (percent) on particular boards in movie and on .../myhands.

Myhands is not completely accurate. It is really a way for the players to see the travellers on a board and get some idea of what the scores were. Someday maybe i'll write a recap sheet.

Main Bridge Club hands are sent to the database every 30 minutes or so (but only after the board has been played 16 times). Tourneys are updated immediately, when the tourney ends.

All normal.

5) I didn't find any way to save the final ranking of tournament as a text file.

There is no explicit way to save the final ranking as a text file. It is currently downloadable as a LIN file only. There may be tricks to extract the names by editing the actual LIN file or some such

It is a long look B) ... The analogous error is in matchpoints tournaments. Average result is e.g. 40%, but for "nonaverage" players is such result treated as PASS too. In this way are results of all such players by every average changed. The many average results are, the bigger may be the deviation. Summary results are not results but APPROXIMATION. For me inadmissible.

Yes, there are no prize money. Yes, people blindly believe to everything, what comes from computer. Not all and not forever.

hi Dusan,

it seems you are judging the scoring of a tourney by what you see in myhands. As Uday pointed out in several posts, this is not acurate in respect to assigned artificial scores - playes should look at the movie after the event.

When the whole tourney thing started I had a closer look at the scoring and found it was ok, apart from a bug I reported, which I believe was corrected by Uday long ago.

Yes Karl, you are right. This error is only in myhands, excuse me. In results is only a smaller one:

> adjusted results are ignored by everyone else (altering the top on the board)

wrote uday. Yes, but alters top only for setting points to all other players not the basis for calculation of percentage. Example: 4 tables, 3 different results and adjusted 50 %

BBO points 2 - 1 - 0 - 1.5 per cent 100 - 50 - 0 - 50

should be 2.5 - 1.5 - 0.5 - 1.5 per cent 83.3 - 50 - 16.7 - 50

BBO calculates per cent of the first 3 results from top 2, the 4th from top 3. In our country this is not right. All boards should have the same weight and the top in every board should be the same for all players. Let me show you next example:

Two pairs on the same line have in first 7 boards top (only these pairs). In the last board results are the same at 3 tables only our first pair becames adjusted average 50 %. What happenes ?

BBO

Pair 1: 7 x 2.5 from 3, 1 x 1.5 from 3 - summary 19 from 24 = 79.17 %

Pair 2: 7 x 2.5 from 3, 1 x 1 from 2 - summary 18.5 from 23 = 80.43 %

I think

Both pairs: 7 x 2.5 from 3, 1 x 1.5 from 3 - summary 19 from 24 = 79.17 %

So how many per cent was this adjusted 50 % ? Answer is 50. The difference is from decrement of percentage-basis for all other pairs. Every their point measures more, their final results spreads from average (pairs over average have more and vice versa).

Another (and better I think) method of calculating in such cases is to do it proportionally, but this is another cup of tea.
