RHO deals and opens 1, White on White

You hold:

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=saq873hkqjtda7c32]133|100|[/hv]

Whats your bid.

You have to use standard methods (SAYC, ACOL), no ultra modern overcalls with non natural meanings

1NT

Once again, the hand is slightly strong for 1NT. However, i don't see any other options with the hand.

Pass looks reasonable at first glance, however, I'm going to be badly positioned if partner re-opens with a double...

Hello everyone

Pass and also pass partner's reopening double.

Lead problem? Heart King.

If partner holds the bulk of the values, he will sometimes(often) balance with a double.

If LHO has the bulk of the remaining values, your 1NT ovecall will often be doubled.

Hello adhoc3

Good bidding. Nice pass! The hand does have 'some' defense.

I learned to defend doubled one level bids while playing Blue Team in the 70's.

Opener will be leading out of his hand towards a very poor dummy.

Opener should have 'some' problems making seven tricks if partner X's.

AQ873 'behind' declarer cannot be all that bad. Blood on the table. :)

Regards,

Robert

Suicidal

Partner is suggesting Heart length

You have three defensive tricks outside of Hearts

[in retrospect, you'll almost certianly get a third Heart trick]

Even so, I very much dislike passing and going for blood.

Partner is almost obligated to reopen with Heart shortage.

Defending 1X seems far too risky...

This is close. BTW, in Kelsey's world, RHO could well hold only 4, which strengthens the hand significantly for both offence and defence.

I pass, and I will sit for 1 doubled at this heat. This hand has a lot more than 3 defensive tricks outside of : or don't I get to count some small trumps as tricks??

I was close to pass, too, but the spade spots stopped me - if they were AQ98x I would be much more comfortable with the pass. Add the borderline spade spots to the heart support that is implied by a reopening double and I think the edge has to go to 1N - but it is close.

I'd bid 1N but I have a lot of respect for a pass. If pard reopens with a double, I'm happy holding this heart suit, since I have a nice tap suit.

Looks like there may be a lot of work in 4 on a 4-4 fit. I'll take my +300 or so in 1.

Curious idea. If the auction proceeds, 1 - pass - 1N - pass - 2x - pass - 2, pass, pass - perhaps double can be "look at your hand and figure it out".

And if the auction proceeds: 1 - pass - 1N - pass - pass I have a prototypical penalty double with the spade stack.

I don't understand this reasoning. Extra length in RHO's suit (with marginal spots) diminishes the trick taking potential of this hand, so I don't understand the idea that this hand is 'slightly strong' for a 1N overcall.

If anything, its the spade length that causes me to devalue this hand to a 1N overcall.

Contrast the subject hand with: AQ, KQJx, ATxx, xxx which is FAR better.
