what do you do if...

Recommended Posts

Just played in a tournament with my favorite partner, waltrak. While my play left a lot to be desired (as usual), the server was shaky. At some point, I got kicked out and it took a short while to get back. As I got back and got seated I noticed that waltrak then got kicked out and there were 9 minutes left till next round. No biggie, right? Except that all of a sudden I had a new partner, the TD posted next to the tourney name was nowhere in sight, the new partner didn't wish to leave the seat, so I just signed off. I know, I committed a deadly sin, but I hope that powers that be will make certain allowances for situations like these without suspending me.

I would like to know what are my responsibilities as a participant in a tournament as this is the very first time I've signed off while a tournament is in progress.

Obvioiusly you get the death penalty. ;)

But seriously, the system has a lot of flexible room for the occassional disconnects due to bad connections or yes, even a partner you can't stand. Just try not to detest all partners you play with. There are limits to the systems willingness to look the other way.

I think the point is that he wanted to play with waltrak, and not with <some other person> however good or bad this person might be. I think this behaviour is okay, after all he never asked to play with <some other person>.

This is a big problem, if you plan to play a tourney with X and suddenly you have to finish with Y but the reason you are online is to play with X, I don't think you should be forced to play with Y.

Where was the TD he could have easily sorted this out!

Yes, I have found myself in a similar situation before:

I mean, sometimes you want to play a tourney with XXX and ONLY HIM/HER, and if he/she gets boted, you'd prefer to retire from the tourney, not because the standings or bad results, but simply because you want to go on play with your partner (who in the meantime has been subbed in the tourney and is in the lobby) and not with a sub.

It appears to me that you are 100 percent blameless here. Through no fault of yours, the original partnership could not be restored. Your new partner X will, at his insistance, be playing. If you stay, he will play with you. If you leave, he will play with some unknown partner Y. Or maybe there will be a Y and Z. No matter what you do, it will be a new partnership taking over your seats and I see no reason for anyone to expect that you will be part of it. This is not remotely like getting fed up with your original partner part way through and packing off in a huff.
