(1) - X - (1) - ?

(2) - X - (2) - ?[/hv]

This was partner's problem. Am anticipating you will bid pass, X or 1NT on the first round. Which one and why?

Either way, LHO bids 2, partner doubles and RHO bids 2. Your go. If it matters what you did on the first round, feel free to mention that.

I agree with doubling exactly once.

If I doubled 1H then partner has not shown a big hand and I don't feel comfortable doubling 2D.

If I passed 1H then partner has shown a monster and I'm delighted to stamp on their 2D.

The first call is close, I would double (showing exactly 4 hearts).

1NT the first round. I do not care if 1H was a psychic -- I like notrump better here. Plus, I want partner to know where my points are.

On the second round, I pass -- partner knows my hand, for the most part. If he reopens with another double, I sit. He can (and will) bid 2H to check back if hearts is viable.

Hello everyone

I agree with Hannie. Two doubles for me.

Since I have 'shown' 4+ hearts and partner 'doubled' a second time suggesting 4315 or 4324 with extra values, doubling 2Ds looks like a good idea. Partner has the spades and clubs 'behind' declarer and the diamonds are also 'stacked' against them.

The first double was very close, however, the second double is much more solid since partner has shown 'extra' values. It might get very ugly for the other pair.

No suits are breaking for the other pair and partner holds declarers second suit 'behind' him. Call your broker and tell him to buy!

Regards,

Robert

An interesting issue is the meaning of partner's second double if we double 1H. If we follow standard rules for doubles, it is simply punitive of clubs, since our double of 1H started a punitive sequence.

But that doesn't seem very useful. We already know that if partner has a minimum takeout double of diamonds, most of the time he will have something in clubs. I think it makes sense for partner's second double to show extra strengh. (it could be a strong balanced hand, but opponent's bidding and our diamond holding suggest this is unlikely).

What do you think ?

Back to the original question : i would pass 1H. For me, the hand is just a tad too weak for a double. The second bid is an easy double.

On this hand, partner chose a somewhat light 1NT bid initially. He said afterwards that he would normally pass. I had an easy double of 2 given that I was 4-3-1-5 in shape with an 18 count. LHO corrected to 2 and partner doubled. This went for 800. It was an interesting question whether I can double 2 (for penalties) if partner passes the first time around.

your partner doubled for t/o, if i don't double now he'll never know we have a heart fit (if we do) and we'll always get the same type bid after a t/o

Do you mean that you would double to show four hearts no matter the strengh of the hand ? Surely, there has to be some minimum requirement for strenght, in addition to the hearts. I wouldn't double with xx - Jxxx - xxxx - xxx, or xx - Kxxx - xxxx - xxx. The problem hand is, for me, just below the minimum required strenght. Add a queen somewhere and i would double.

I didn't understand this part of your post.

I would pass 1H probably as most of my values are in partner's short suit. I think a X should show a slightly better hand. I definitely crack 2D after partner's second X and expect to beat it a lot.
