Chance to play with the champs....

inquiry

Recommended Posts

While quietly minding your own business, you are suddenly invited to play on a team with the current BBO champions, Haspel. How could you turn that down?

So ok, here is your agreement, discussed in one two lines of text with your partner....

Partner: 2/1 GF and all the usual conventions”.

Inquiry: "ok"

Good luck, here are the interesting (?) hands (all imps).

Partner probably has 4 spades to double. I would bid 2S. If my singleton weren't in partner's suit, I would bid 3S.

2D. Even if you play 1NT as semi-forcing by a passed hand, this hand is just a little too strong to pass. A poster in another thread said he played 2D as guaranteeing 4 cards, however, I believe this isn't a standard treatment.

I am sure there is a clever way to approach this auction, but I don't know it :)

RKC. If he has both key cards, go to 6D, otherwise settle in 5. 6 could go down with the wrong distribution, but will probably make.

The lack of the DQ wouldn't stop me, as we will have 10 trumps and the AK.

2S: he might have a hand that's weaker than an opening, skipping the S with long D. If he bids something else, then that's bad luck. Any case, Dbl = info or optional, because at imps, you don't want them to make that contract and score bigtime, and if they go down, it gives you only 1 imp extra...

Partner forced me to bid (2Hx has to be takeout as everyone realized). If I bid only 2S, I could be totally broke, and it is very unlikely we will be able to bid game. But the question, would your partner make an initial takeout double with four spades and longer diamonds? Do you risk bidding just 2S and play in a likely 4-3 fit with a possible good club fit available? Also, 2S seemed such an underbid. I could imagine a hand like: S-QTx H-A D-AQxxx C-KQxx. So I choose 3H, hoping partner would leap to 4S with a surprise four spades or 4/5 clubs depending on how strong his hand is. In otherwords, I thought 3H would get us to the correct black suit and maybe to the correct level. Over my 3H, partner surprised me with a 3NT rebid. What is that? If partner has a heart stopper, then the dble wasn’t what I thought it was. It must have be some kind of game try. I decided it might show running diamonds, and a heart stopper. Imagining a hand like S-xx H-Ax D-AKQJxxx C-Qx. I passed the 3NT. This was a bad one for the old dog, as 3NT was not successful, as we went down four vul. Partner held

One may ask how the auction should go. If I held the hand in third seat, red versus white, I might have been tempted to make a “weak” jump overcall of 3D (at t his vul, it is not all that weak), but 2D is not bad. But the double seems wrong to me. I suspect over 2H I would pass this hand. All the 2S bidders would have won big, congradulations.

I of course assume “usual conventions” mean we are playing 2 way reverse drury. Presumably 1NT is forcing, but I saw no reason to bid. If we were vul, I would make another call on the outside chance we might have game. 1NT turned out golden since we took exactly 7 tricks. A good one for the old dog. 1NT was the last chance to go positive on this hand. Partner held,

Ok, so I leaped to 6NT, as did my opponents holding this hand. Partner showed up with

S-xx

H-void

D-KJ8xxx

C-Kxxx

I got a low spade lead, and when I played the Diamond ACE, the hand BEHIND the KJ of diamonds showed out, so I had 12 sure tricks. I cashed top spades and then hooked in diamonds. RHO had the heart ACE, LHO had the 4th spade, so the double squeeze worked and I made an overtrick. My opponents played low diamond to the king and had to go down one due to the 3-0 split. Another good one for the old dog.

Ok, so did we agree spades, or clubs. Was 5NT a “pickem slam” or a grand slam try. If partner wanted to invite the grand in spades, might he not leap to 6Hearts (Josephine)? If so 5NT would be grand slam in clubs or a pick-em ask. This is interesting question, as virtually every one here took 5NT as GSF in clubs. I think it can’t be GSF in spades, because 6H is available for that. This would be an interesting discussion of when 5NT would be pickem and when grand slam try, and if so, when it is use. I like kantar 4NT, with 2 suit agreement here, so 4NT followed by 5NT would lead to pickem, so I, like the responders here, took 5NT as GST in clubs. Add to this, that I never showed much, but partner surely is looking for good something to bid the grand slam. I took that something to be the club Queen, so I bid the grand slam (I do have TWO ACES, after all). Sadly, partner meant it as grand slam for spades. The 7C is a 50% chance to make (it needs the spade finesse). The spade hook was off, so 7C was down (could make 7C by discarding two of my spades on partners good hearts (!) and ruffing one spade, but that was against the odds. Our opponents missed slam, languishing only in 4Spades. Another bad one for the old dog (but if the hook had been on, it would have been a great one for the old DOG)

How did you do?

NB : the rs line doesn't like to be cut in two lines, so return it as a single line to get all 10 results displayed (....1NE=,6NW-2....)

Comments :

1. board 1 costed 7 points and was interesting to discuss. The 2D in the other room was very brave !

2. board 3 : your 2H was too much clever !

3. board 5 : forgetting the actual result, you can't pass. Yes, Luis made 7 tricks, but another day, with the same hand, he would have made easily 8 or 9 (as your opponents).

4. board 7 : 5NT is a real problem, more for me who knows very little about biddings over 4NT :), than for you.

It is a less than 50% 7C (you need the SK, but also no bad 4-1 club split, nor spade void in South).

How did you do?

Ben

:) I did great! :D I've bid all the right answers: bid 2S, passed at the 1NT, tried for 6NT or 6D and I was the only one who saw 5NT as GSF in Spades.

About that 5NT, you've supported your partner in S, so this is the only time you're sure that partner knows you have a fit. His C-bid is not necessarily natural, neither is yours imo...

Congratulations to Free for handling my crazy bids well :-)

The double of 2h once I was passed in 2d was intended as "I don't want to let them play 2h". I can stand 2s, 3c or 3d so choose one. I didn't expect pd to come back to life with a cuebid once we had settled in 2d. This is a very interesting topic to discuss. Once you passed your pd overcall are you allowed to drive to game? Once your pd passes a 2 level overcall can you double or bid again without extras just to compete?

Should we start a thread?

I agree with free, maybe wrongly, that once spades were supported my 3c bid may not be a suit as well as Ben's 4c. So 5NT was intended as Josephine in spades. If pd has AKxx, x, Something, Axx I have a lot of chances to win 13 tricks specially with the marked heart finesse, and maybe marked ruffing finesse in diamonds. I was too greeedy looking for a golden hand that can win 7s, I should've settled for a small slam that surely was a good enough result.
