Winstonm
Quite a problem. Although I like to have some "stuff" to bid at the 3-level, there comes a time when I have to define "stuff" - and it is more than HCPs - comes under the heading of "reason to bid". While it is true partner may expect more in the way of high cards, I have a suit good enough to run to if partner doubles or tries a specualtive 3N. I also have the spade suit - never a bad thing. Besides, partner can pretty easily hold a hand that will make game and not be able to balance: Kx, Q10xx, xxxx, AKx. And lastly, odds are good that the opponents are getting ready to raise to some number of hearts, making it that much harder (and dangerous) to get back in. Like JLall is fond of saying, sometimes the risks of passing are greater than the risks of bidding - he may not agree, but I am inclined to think this is one of those times. 3D Winston
pclayton
I'd pass originally but I'd find a back-in double of 4♥. I've had a lot of success (random perhaps) making this call. If pard pulls to 5♣, I'll try 5♦. Double here means - "look at your hand and figure it out".
