Matchpoints, all vuln

Pard deals and open a weak NT, (12)13-15.

Opps are silent, and you hold

K9x-KJT9x-K8x-Tx

Playing no sophisticated methods, you first transfer to hearts, and when the bidding comes back, you have to decide (if you didn't yet) whether to pass or invite at matchpoints.

If you invite, pard will accept with most "normal" 14 count.

Yes, I would invite. I would prefer to make a Keri-style invite where I could've stopped at the 2 level opposite most minima.

I'd expect to go down if partner passed or bid 3H though

Interesting point by Gerben. I hadn't replied initially as I was debating passing 1NT. I think I would just transfer to 2 and pass if partner does not super-accept. We have all soft values and also a 5332 shape making game not very likely in 4. 3NT might be right, but it will be tough to get there if partner has 3.

I invite via 2N

I have a good 10 count with wonderful spots. This is not, for me, a 'soft' hand: for me soft hands are rich in quacks. This is an almost pure control hand, with 10's and 9's. As such it is a moderate upgrade.

Pass is too anti-field, since partner may have 15 and the entire field will be in game if they play strong notrumps.

Blasting game is also anti-field, since partner may have 13.

Inviting is just right :( . If partner has 15 we are back with the field. If he has 13, we may be one-level higher than the field, but we have enough extras to make that okay. If partner has a reasonable 14, then we are going to be slightly against the field, but in a good way, because this is a full-value (and then some) 10 count.

Its hard to predict the field result when you play an anti-field method. You risk a full board swing whatever you do.

If you invite with hands like this then don't blame pard when he accepts with a non-fitting so-so 14 count and game is hopeless.

Nevertheless I'd make a Keri 2 call if available. That way we will stop in 2 opposite a minimum with 3 and play 2N otherwise. We might find our 5-3 fit too :P

2nd option is to pass hoping NT plays the same as hearts or that they balance.

10 count, nice intermediates, nice 5 card suit, I invite with 2N. Matchpoints smatchpoints.

In my preferred methods I would respond 2C (Hearts or balanced). With more than 3 card support opener commits to 3H, but with fewer he would distinguish between max v min via choice of 2D/2H, so I get to play in 2H if partner refuses the game try.
