1H----DBL---2H----2S

4D----4S----5H----DBL

pass--5S----DBL//

North led HA, and K was ruffed by dummy. SA, found south had 5 spades. Run CAKQx, south ducked until the 5th club..... went 1 down.

If you were sitting west, what would you say to your PD? [/hv]

Hi,

Nothing, if I have only to worry

about converting +100 in -100

I will be playing winning bridge.

The shape for the takeout double

is fairly unusual, defence against

5H is low, ... 5S takes the insurance

and may be the winner.

There are hands out there, where

5H and 5S both are making.

Ideally, nothing at all: next board. I think that pass was more reasonable than 5, when partner expressed his view of 5. But a competent partner will reflect on this without our criticism. If I felt I had to help my partner's education, I hope I would wait until after the session, and then I'd ask rather than tell.

I wouldn't say anything, because I don't* when I'm at the table.

But I would think "5H is only one down, and much of the time 5S would have made with 5H only 2 down"

I would wonder why I'd doubled 5H. I have no extra offence, and no extra defence compared to what I have shown. I would have passed.

However, I would also have wondered by partner pulled 5Hx. It's bad partnership discipline, although I understand it given his hand.

But then I'd have overcalled 2C on partner's hand on the first round, and bid spades next.

*I try not to, anyway.

I think the point of the original post was not what we would actually say, just what we'd be wanting to say to pard. I could be wrong, but in the poll it does say "what would you think?" Obviously we would try not to say anything (some of us are better at that than others :P)

Nothing, it's bridge. At IMP, I am not against taking some insurance in these very unbalanced hands.

Actually, I think that none of the partners sinned:

- the t/o double is off-shape, but the hand is quite strong. At worst, a misdemeanour.

- 5HX says: "I do not think we can make 5S", it's not a penalty double with a vengeance. And it's the "book" bid.

- E should know that 5S can make or at worst be 1 down. 5H will likely be 1-2 down, but it can make a few times. Toss of the coin. I sympathize with E, and his decision.

- Overall, it is not the kind of auction which can wreck a partnership.

BTW, is this makable if double dummy?

I think not, but if he really failed to ruff untill he had only trumps left then I guess it should make. Keep running clubs keeping your then overuff and cross ruff your tricks.

Once he didn't ruff the 4th club, you can make by pitching diamonds on the 3rd and 4th clubs and then pitch another diamond on the 5th club if RHO ruffs high w/ J or 9 (then end up cashing DA, ruffing a heart high, and picking up trumps) but overruff if RHO ruffs small (then cash DA, ruff a heart high, and uppercut with another club to score Q8 over J9x).

[As for the main question, there's no obvious error -- just a fun hand to discuss afterwards.]
