A 2 part opening lead question---

Simple questions, but complex answers no doubt:

When leading from x-x-x against NT in Partner's bid suit, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

When leading from x-x-x against NT in a suit not bid by partner, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

Thanks for the accumulated wisdom, assuming there is some!! ;) :)

If I am very weak and little entries, I'll lead a top card, it may well force a useful card from dummy in a finessable position.

If I do have something, I'll lead a middle one.

If I am very strong, and pard is bound to be broke, leading from xxx does not have a bright future, and usually I'll try to set up one of my suits.

However, leading from xxx might avoid blowing trick, especialy at MP, and especially if I have no 5+ card suit.

I any case, when pard is broke, you can often lead whichever you want from xxx since pard is unlikely to benefit from the signal if he never gets in (indeed when one defender holds all the hcp, then it's the time to try deceptive leads/signals to set some traps to declarer).

When leading from x-x-x against NT in Partner's bid suit, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

The lowest would tend to show an honor, the highest would tend to show two cards only. You have to decide which of these is more useful to partner. Lead low if you have not supported partner. If you have, then lead the highest to show no honor.

When leading from x-x-x against NT in a suit not bid by partner, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

Top to show no honor.

However, playing Polish leads (2nd and 4th) I always lead the middle one, followed by the lower one to show a tripleton ;)

a.) When leading from x-x-x against NT in Partner's bid suit, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

Which general lead-agreements does the partnership have?

I like playing 2./4. against NT, so: middle. With some partners we lead 3./5., then small :)

If I supported partner's suit, we play attitude and the lead would be the highest.

b.) When leading from x-x-x against NT in a suit not bid by partner, do you like Top, Middle, or Bottom?

I follow again the general lead-agreement of the partnership, but personally prefer 2./4. . Perhaps we play Smith-Peter ;)

Is it an Indy or a pick-up partnership I would assume standard lead is 4th best and play top of nothing in both cases.

If I have supported partner's suit, I'll lead the top one. He knows I have three already, so I may as well deny an honour.

If I haven't supported partner's suit, I'll usually lead the bottom one. It sounds like this suit is going to be our source of tricks so I want to encourage pard to play on it.

In an unbid suit I'll usually lead the top one, so partner doesn't think that it is my suit and that it needs establishing.

Mike Lawrence says to lead:

  • TOP if you have supported (as Mike says, partner knows you have some, so deny an honour)
  • BOTTOM if you have not supported ... as you are unlikely to have Hxx and it is useful to distinguish between two- and three-small.
