bigger cards and chat

Are bigger cards and font a priority for BBO fred/uday? I really think it should be. The current big cards isn't really big, ditto chat font. (Ariel being the best for those with some eyesight problem, but even bigger is better)

Over the years here, I've befriended some nice BBOers with eyesight problems. Its not a small percentage. Older people do have eyesight problems and bridge players are old.

If its not difficult to do this I think it will make a lot of people happy to have the option of big big cards and font.....

You sure the big cards aren't really big?

The regular (ie small) cards are 71x96 pixels. Area=6816 square pixels.

The new big cards are 87x120 pixels. Area=10440 square pixels.

So the big cards are more than 50% bigger than the small cards.

Most Windows programs use decks that are the same size (or smaller) than our small cards. I am not aware of any other bridge programs that use cards that are as big as our big cards.

Of course, if a person has their screen set to a very high resolution then everything will appear to be small. Using a resolution of 1024x768 along with the big cards should make for an effective display, even for people with poor eyesite.

One day (probably not one day soon) I will give the user complete control of the font that is used for chat, but I think the Ariel font we use now is already bigger and bolder than those that are used in most other programs.

Jack Bridge uses really nice looking big cards. And they don't make them by scaling up small cards, they use custom bitmaps for each different size.

Or simpler, just have a super big card view which just shows the top left corner of cards.

For laptops, changing the resolution is often impractical, as using a different than the native resolution will result in a dramatic loss of sharpness.

(I am not complaining, but on my 1920x1200 laptop display, I could really use a BBO window that can fill up a little more space...)

Is it my settings? When I click "Big Deal", the cards move further away from each other, but that's about it. They are not noticebly bigger. I'm on 1440x900, win xp. Is this why i"m not seeing what you see?

If the diagram fred has in his post is what the "Big Cards" should look like (to scale), its definitely not what I see. I don't know what others see. I personally am still able to see cards in BBO, but I know at least 2 friends who has problems playing now because of cards (aging, eyesight problem), and another with the less severe problem of not being able to see chat.

Roland's hand diagram instead of pictures does make cards bigger and easier to see for them. But its still not big enough. And again, "big deal" does not make the cards bigger, just more spacing between each hand.

If cards have more spacing between them, that helps a lot for the visually impaired.

The Jack Bridge card picture looks great and seeable. :->

Some confusion.

In order to see bigger cards, the following need to be true

- you need to be at a table

- you need to be in "pictures" mode ( click the Spade Ace icon on the bottom toolbar)

- Wide mode (control-w toggles between wide/narrow mode)

- Big deal (the button to the right of the Spade A icon on the bottom toolbar)

With all this true, the options screen (yellow gear on bottom toolbar) has a checkbox called BIG in the "DECK" area.

Check it.

Got it thanks. I'll guide the 3 of my pals and ask them if its big enough. This may work now since it is bigger than previously.

If I login as xyz on my computer, then adjust settings for xyz(so that they see big cards), can xyz see it when he logs in on his computer?

I dont think it is the size of the suits and the numbers that is the problem..it is the space between the cards that causes misclicks..I wear glasses and always sit real close to the screen..it would be nice to be able to lean back and still play the cards..perhaps give people the option of seperating their cards further apart..and I no longer have the option for BIG DEAL...my screen resolution is 800X600 and makes problems in other problems..what can I do?

To toggle between the wide and narrow mode, press teh Cntl-W key at the same time. That should fix it...

I tried your directions..

As Ben said, to switch to wide mode, hold down "CTRL" and press "W".

You can also switch to wide mode from the Main Lobby -- Click on the black "View - Adjust display settings" button, and select "Wide Screen".

The "Big Deal" button on the bottom menu will be grayed out unless you're actually at a table; if you join a table (even as a kibitzer) you should be able to toggle between big deal / small deal. (It just changes how much of the screen is used for the deal, and how much is used for the chat below.)

Once you've gotten those settings changed, the last step (as uday said) is:

> the options screen (yellow gear on bottom toolbar) has a checkbox called BIG in the

> "DECK" area. Check it.

Hope that helps,

Susan

This issue has come up with users of the software that my company develops. We may eventually modify the software, but in the mean time have discovered that there is also plenty of software to do screen magnification, including a minimal feature built into recent Microsoft Windows OS's.
