Do u bid and if so what?

Recommended Posts

4M/5m hands with invitational values are really tough to handle over 1NT, much less 2. I think I pass this in the knowledge that game in spades or NT might be making. But it's close. Give me say a 6th diamond or a better chance for an entry outside of diamonds (e.g. QT9x of spades and xx in both side suits), then I'd roll out whatever version of stayman I have. Mind you, I'd still feel better if partner had 4 (5) spades, but I'd feel more comfortable about 3NT now.

I bid Puppet Stayman and pass every response, well knowing we might have missed a 4 - 4 fit after 3 response. Worst case is partner bids 3NT and we are down 1 more ;)

You don't have the problem of the 3NT response if you use the modified Puppet played by Meckwell !

I saw that recently on their convention card and if I remember it was something like :

2NT 3 asking for 4 or 5 M

3M = 5M

3 = all other hands (4M or not !)

Then :

3 shows 4 or nothing (2NT bidder bid 3 with 4 or 3NT without)

3 shows 4

3NT shows both 4M

4m are slam tries in m

This seems simple, effective and interesting, doesn't it ?

20-22 is too wide a range. Partner has 22 in 1/6 of the deals, yet you have to cater to the possibility every time.

Anyway, even if we assume maximum points in partner's hand, the Jacks are the most overvalued honors in the Work's schema. Besides, 2 of them are unprotected. Unless I strongly need a swing, I pass, and pray partner can make 2NT, because it won't be easy.

I'd consider showing signs of life with something like:

10982

xx

K10932

xx

Same points, same distribution, only a 10 more, but a slightly better hand IMO.

This is unlikely to be a hand that makes exactly 8 tricks. I bid stayman then 3N if we don't have a 4-4 spade fit. If pard has good diamonds he'll likely make, if not he'll likely be down a few.

Indeed the fate of 2NT and 3NT is probably the same, it depends on what pd has in diamonds.

hello everyone

I used to play Gladiator. 2NT-3C forced 3D. If I was playing that convention, I would use it here.

I do play a version of puppet stayman over 2NT. So I could use my toy knowing 90+% of the time I would end up in 3Ds. If partner bids 3Hs(showing 5) that is another matter.

I suspect that my methods would alter this bidding somewhat. I play 1C-1D-1NT shows 18-20HCP. Which would eliminate about 40-45%of the 20-22HCP range. I also play a 2NT bid shows 21-22 HCP which makes gambling with the weak hand somewhat more likely. 3NT is not a really bad gamble if partner does not bid 3Ds over a 21-22HCP 2NT.

Regards,

Robert

20-22 is a wide range! Game might be laydown and there is also a good chance that 2NT goes down, so trying for game seems clear.

(My methods would also alter the bidding somewhat. A MisIry 2NT would show either a weak hand with long clubs, or a strong 2-suiter with hearts so I would bid 3C to see what partner has.)
