Do you, or don't you?

double: shows support for all the unbid suits (which I have in a twisted sort of way). I used to pass these hands: then I learned better

No guarantees, but experience suggests better to bid now and pass later than the reverse

Double.

Bad shape, but 3 card support for all the unbid suits, and, most important, no wasted values.

If pard has support I hop to play the hand along the lines of dummy reversal.

You are in 2nd chair, red on white, against unknown opps. MP pairs, strat:

A6xx

ATx

xxx

AQx

RHO opens 1. Your action?

can't see any other bid but X :P even at red V white because

"It's NOW or never "(to quote Elvis totally outside bridge and irrevelant ;) )

seriously IF you don't X with a decent 14 count how do you ever bid anything? -- you don't have a decent suit of you own  AND you have at LEAST 3 card support for any suit P might be forced to bid if LHO passes WTP ??? ;)

Pass!

I always get a kick out of watching folks make doubles on triple-three-4's. Then they wonder why they go down in 2 of a major after pard gets tapped a few times in his 4-3 fit at the 2 level. Oh well, lose 4 IMPS to tough luck (our pards struggled in 1N and got nipped a trick).

The xxx is another black mark, but it wouldn't matter to me if it was Hxx.

I always get a kick out of watching people pass and wondering why they missed game with 14 opp 11/12 and were defending 1N. Oh well lose 10 to bad luck.

Oh, we are defending 2S and pard has a stiff spade and 5 hearts? Crap we missed 4H. Lose another 10 to bad luck.

Oh, the opps made a partscore when we could have made a partscore? Lose 6 to bad luck.

Oh, I felt like i had to bid later in the auction because I hadn't shown my values? Oh well... -800 lose 12.

BTW xxx is BETTER than other holdings with 3 diamonds. As opposed to an overcall, after we X partner will be playing the hand so they won't be leading through him. All of our values are outside of diamonds, which is a good thing. Qxx would be much worse here.

I strongly felt a double was out of the question. 4-3-3-3 hands are worth lying in wait for.

Now for the rest of the hand:

1 - X - 1 - 4 (on void KQJT9 xxx KJxxx, but felt I better get us moving quick instead of a puny responsive double).

LHO sacs at 4, pard X's. I pull and get corrected into five hearts, off one. Diamonds are yep, 3-3, in our hands. We have 150 honors in hearts and it was not a good board.

What's worse

a. stretching to double with 4333, bad shape but no wasted honors ?

or

b. pulling pard's double of 4S ?

Your pard's initial double certainly contributed to the result here - and your 4 created a guessing situation - for you. Perhaps a 2 cue early on would let you get your hearts in and show some strength. Maybe there should be a way for 4th hand to show a 2 suiter after a double, but I don't know of any.

Give pard a more 'typical' TOx os AQxx, Axx, xx, Qxxx and pard still has his dbl especially at MPs, and you rate to set 4 whereby 5 doesn't have a chance.

I'll stick to my guns here - doubles show SHAPE.

Keylime,

Clearly the majority votes for double, while some very good players vote for pass. Your 4H bid looks fine to me, but pulling partner's penalty double after having already jumped to 4H seems wrong. Perhaps you should look at your own bids first before you blame partner for doubling.
